The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the Blood Sciences departments (Immunology, Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry) being responsible for managing, motivating and effectively leading the scientific and support staff in the delivery and development of a quality driven service.
Have responsibility to develop the strategic direction of the services in line with local, reginal and national requirements.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Blood Sciences Department and maintain an efficient high-quality service in line with UKAS requirements.
As a registered Biomedical Scientist, you should be able to demonstrate a postgraduate level knowledge of Biomedical sciences in one of the specified blood sciences fields, and have experience of quality management and delivering training.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management for the Haematology, Immunology, Biochemistry and Transfusion services ensuring that the workload is processed in an efficient manner, and that published turnaround times are achieved.
You will be required to ensure the effective and efficient deployment of resources within the department, including staff, reagents, and consumables, and to monitor the daily work activity, participating in the technical work as and when required so to do. Job share may be considered but this will have to be discussed in line with the needs of the service.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MSc or equivalent in a healthcare subject or equivalent experience in a healthcare setting
- Recognised management qualification at postgraduate diploma level or equivalent experience
- HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of higher specialist training gained through short courses or distance learning.
Knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of managing and leading a large complex service department (in one of the constituent elements of Blood Sciences), with a significant number of line reports
- Evidence of successful financial management
- Evidence of effective change management and business planning
- Awareness of national and local NHS agendas
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a teaching hospital or other busy environment
- Experience of working in a Pathology Laboratory
- Experience of NHS financial and administrative financial systems
- UKAS accreditation experience and knowledge
- MHRA accreditation experience and knowledge.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Well-developed IT skills to manage and report on complex performance management information systems.
- Ability to carry out HR planning for a service.
- Ability to organise a broad range of programs pertaining to the service.
- Able to develop strategies to meet objectives and workload demand
- Ability to build successful teams
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of leading change at a service level.
- Good working knowledge of quality management systems.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
