Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia

Consultant

Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia to join the expanding team at Kettering General Hospital, part of University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN). This is an exciting opportunity to work within a modern 16-bed Intensive Care Unit, with planned expansion to 20 beds, alongside a broad and varied anaesthetic service. The successful candidate will provide consultant-led critical care and anaesthesia, contributing to the delivery of high-quality, safe and compassionate care across the hospital. The role offers an attractive balance between Intensive Care and Theatres, with opportunities to develop specialist interests and contribute to teaching, research, quality improvement and service development.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide daytime consultant cover within Intensive Care, including leading multidisciplinary ward rounds, supervising resident doctors and supporting the management of complex critically ill patients. They will also undertake general anaesthesia across a broad range of surgical specialties and participate in the 1:10 Intensive Care on-call rota, supported by resident ICU doctors and established outreach services. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical governance, audit, research and quality improvement, as well as supporting the continued development of the critical care and peri-operative services. This is an excellent opportunity to play an active role in shaping the future of the service as UHN progresses with critical care expansion, digital transformation and the HIP2 new hospital development.

Working for our organisation

University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) brings together Kettering General Hospital and Northampton General Hospital in a collaborative Group Model, providing opportunities to work across a progressive and developing organisation. We are committed to delivering safe, compassionate and clinically excellent care while creating an environment where our people can thrive, develop and make a difference.

Our Dedicated to Excellence values are at the heart of everything we do:

Compassion | Respect | Integrity | Courageous | Accountable

We are proud to offer a supportive and inclusive working environment, with excellent opportunities for teaching, research, professional development and service innovation. Joining UHN means becoming part of a forward-looking organisation with strong academic links, including our partnership with the University of Leicester, and an exciting future ahead as we develop our services and prepare for the HIP2 new hospital build.
