Consultant Paediatrician

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and committed Consultant Paediatrician with general and  neonatal   experience who will work to further enhance the hospital based paediatric and neonatal services, assist in managing the increasing clinical and administrative workload and help achieve the 'facing the future' standards set out by the RCPCH.  This is a new consultant post , funded by two senior consultants retiring and returning to part time working, and retains the total number of consultants on the on call rota to 10.8.  We are particularly seeking applicants with  rheumatology, or gastroenterology interest but any suitable special interest may be considered and developed based on the future needs of the department.

These are times of change for Kettering General Hospital, which is engaging actively in the local health economy. It has been a particularly challenging time for the paediatric department which has seen an unprecedented increase in paediatric in-patient referrals and short term admissions, a reduction in middle grade numbers ( from unfilled posts and as a consequence of the new contract ) and very high patient expectation, all in keeping with national trends. We are a versatile and committed team of doctors and nurses who pride ourselves on providing a high standard of clinical care despite the current pressures on hospital services.

The Paediatric ward relocated in May 2013 into the purpose built ‘Foundation Wing’ housing the new paediatric ‘Skylark Ward’, paediatric assessment unit, offices and dedicated Children’s Outpatients.  This brought the general paediatric wards and outpatient clinics in close proximity to the existing NICU/maternity unit. A Paediatric Assessment Unit has been successful in reducing short term acute admissions to the children’s wards. It is now co located alongside the inpatient facility. In addition, two high dependency beds were established and further cohesion achieved by the close proximity to ITU and theatres.

Our Neonatal Unit is a level 2 or 'Local' neonatal unit. It is part of the Central Newborn Network (now re configured as ‘East midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network’) and is designated to provide intensive care for gestations twenty seven weeks and above. As part of the national Transformation programme some reduction in intensive and high dependency cots is anticipated.

The department enjoys a good reputation for placement with trainees and is staffed with EWTD and new junior doctor contract compliant rotas at middle grade and first-on-call tiers.  The department continues to enjoy a high pass rate amongst trainees taking the Membership examination.

This post aims to improve consultant presence in all acute areas, particularly  the neonatal unit and PAU. The successful candidate will participate in the  duty Paediatrician rota, weekly neonatal rota, and occasional afternoon cover, or cover PAU and A&E, or a combination of both. He /she will contribute to paediatric ‘HOT’ clinics while continuing to provide a full range of paediatric and neonatal services in a safe and sustainable work environment..

In particular the appointment of an additional colleague will go some way in enhancing senior consultant presence in clinical areas and support a 'second on' duty pediatrician rota enabling 2 consultants to be present  and providing acute clinical cover during the working week. There will also be increased flexibility within the team to support tertiary visiting clinics and improve utilisation of clinic space. There are no routine middle grade responsibilities attached to the post but the post holder may be required, on occasion, to cover clinical areas  without middle grade input, or assist in covering clinical areas when availability of middle grades is reduced, for example during regional training days  or sickness absence

The post has clinical responsibilities covering services to children within the Acute Trust in conjunction with ten other consultants working as a team providing elective and emergency children’s acute service for children of North Northamptonshire.
