An opportunity has arisen for you to join the Breast Imaging Team at Northampton General Hospital.

We are looking for an enthusiastic motivated individual with a passion for providing the best care to our patients, to join the breast imaging team as a Radiology Department Assistant (RDA).

The role will primarily be working with the clinicians in the breast one-stop symptomatic clinics in supporting the patients, assisting with interventional procedures and completing appropriate documentation/IT processes.

The role will currently be worked over Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings, however these days will change in the coming months as we extend our core working hours.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for the housekeeping of the clinical rooms and stock provision within the department.

The role requires a compassionate and empathetic person, who is able to manage competing changing priorities and work well within a team.

The service supports a breast screening population of @60,000 women in Central and West Northamptonshire, and provides a symptomatic service for the county. This is provided by a static unit with two mammography units (Pristina) and two ultrasound rooms (with GE US scanners) and two mobile screening units that have Visbion remote image transfer.  Assessment and symptomatic appointments are offered at the Forrest centre, Northampton General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

To work within the multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care and quality of examinations within the Breast Screening Unit under the direction and supervision of an appropriate Registered Health Care Professional.

Promote good communication that supports the dignity and care of the patients.  Assist in maintaining a safe working environment and the provision of compassionate care.

At all times to adhere to statutory, mandatory, care group guidance and the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England (Adopted and adapted for use at NGH January 2014).

To help with basic administration duties including using Radiology computer systems.

To ensure the environment within the Breast Screening Unit is clean and tidy, ensuring examination rooms are ready for use, stocked with linen and consumables. 

Assist with the clinical stock deliveries and ensure rotation of stock within the clinical areas.

Ensure the clinical areas have sufficient patient information prepared and act on clinician instructions in arranging further appointments required for the patients. 

To help other staff make the best use of departmental resources and ensure efficient delivery of planned workload. 

To work flexibly to ensure support is provided to the appropriate clinics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         Carry out duties as assigned, involving patient care and welfare, and assisting the breast imaging team where appropriate.

·         To help with administration duties including using Radiology computer systems and follow the clinicians instructions on organising any future appointments required.

·         To assist patients prior to, during, and after the examination including being able to give the patient a basic explanation of procedures. 

·         To be responsible in arranging and prioritising ad hoc workload, liaising with staff to ensure that lists are covered, patient delays are kept to a minimum and rooms utilised at optimum levels.

·         Assist in the cleaning and preparation of the room prior to and post procedure.

·         Maintain clean and tidy work areas and waiting rooms, participating in regular cleaning rotas for work areas in line with department and Trust policy. This may require contact with bodily fluids and on occasion’s unpleasant smells.

·         Take responsibility for ensuring the safe transportation and timely delivery of specimens and samples to laboratories as required adhering to protocol and procedures.

·         To demonstrate high levels of patient care and work closely with qualified staff maintaining a hands-on approach to patient needs. 

·         To ensure that all patient information stock is maintained in the clinical rooms.

·         To maintain stock records.

·         To take delivery of stores/supplies and put stock away in an organised manner.

·         To ensure rotation of stock in the storerooms and clinical rooms.

·         To undertake routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.

·         To assist in the Quality Assurance Programme.

·         To be responsible for their own personal development and to attend mandatory training as required by the Trust.

·         Ensure Health and Safety legislation is met, and appropriate standards maintained within the Radiology Department.

·         To report clinical and non-clinical incident through the correct departmental and Trust procedures.

·         To be familiar with the fire procedure for the department.

·         To be able to wear personal protective equipment and to stand for extended periods of time during radiographic procedures. 

Responsibilities for Department Administration and Operation

·         Ensure accuracy of patient and examination details on the Radiology computer systems.

·         Answer telephone queries and deal with them appropriately and professionally.

·         Assist with clerical and reception duties.

·         To assist with post-processing and ensure that images have reached PACS.

·         To seek assistance when the service provision is compromised.

·         Support the team training new staff where appropriate within the multi-disciplinary team. Undertake one to one training/mentoring with new starters.

·         To help with student training and work experience students as required.

·         Undertake any other duties consistent with their grade as required.

·         To adhere to all Local Rules, Ionising Radiation Regulations and Health & Safety procedures, including prompt reporting of accidents, equipment faults and untoward incidents and any new policies and procedures.

·         Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves, other staff, patients and visitors, with reference to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
