Band 5 Staff Nurse Paediatric Assessment Unit

Full time and part time hours available 

We are looking to recruit a Registered Nurse to join the team in our busy Paediatric Assessment Unit.  If you are confident, motivated, a good communicator and willing to learn new skills and extend your practice as opportunities arise, we would be excited to hear from you.

The post holder will assist in the overall management of the service ensuring delivery of high standards of care to patients and their families in the PAU setting. They will act as a clinical role model providing leadership and support to both nursing and medical staff ensuring the promotion of a safe working environment.

 

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Assessment Unit which is adjacent to the children's wards, has 7 beds with additional space for ambulatory patients. The unit takes referrals from GPs ,  the  A/E department, open access and midwives.

Following assessment and treatment the children are then either admitted as necessary or discharged home. The unit is open between 0900-2200 7 days per week including bank holidays and weekends.

Supporting Clinical Excellence

  • Assisting and contributing to the management and organisation of the clinical area.
  • Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.
  • Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific development and competency Programmes.
  • To contribute to annual appraisals and be responsible for own personal performance/development plan to achieve KSF outline for role.
  •  Able to identify learning needs in self, negotiating a Personal Development Plan recognising own limitations.
  •  To undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary for the role following the Trust policy ‘Expansion of Professional Practice for Registered Healthcare Practitioners.
  • To be responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications including controlled drugs.
  • To promote and maintain effective communication both written and verbal.
  • To maintain a safe ward environment.

Supporting Patient Excellence

  • Actively undertake education, development and supervision of other staff members, assisting them in meeting work demands to provide a quality patient experience. 
  • Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.
  • To be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  • To co-ordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with NGH Local Discharge Policy.
  • To ensure the education of patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
  • To ensure patient documentation is of Trust Standard

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

People/Management Excellence

  • Assist the Unit Manager in the development of team members.
  • Assist the Unit Manager in the monitoring of workload and skill mix.
  • Assist the Unit Manager in managing the unit in accordance with Trust policies and procedure i.e. the management of sickness/absence.
  • Participate in the orientation and support of new staff.
  • To maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff and students. 

Quality Assurance and Monitoring

  •  To promote evidence-based practice within the clinical area.
  • Contribute to audit initiatives.
  • Participate in setting and reviewing standards for practice and evaluating outcomes as part of the clinical governance agenda.
  • To maintain and promote an awareness of evidence-based practice and participate in its implementation.
  • To contribute to research and service improvement/ development programmes within the department. 

Supporting Financial Excellence

  • To have an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment, supported by the Unit Manager in the control of departmental budget.
  • To be responsible for the effective and efficient use of clinical and physical resources.

  • Educated to Registered Nurse (Child) level or equivalent level of education, training or experience Registered nurse Adult with PAU/HDU/Aand E/PICU experience
