Job overview

The postholder will ensure delivery of high standards of care, acting as a clinical role model providing support to junior members of the team and students. They will promoting a safe environment for staff and public in the department.

They will take responsibility for ensuring excellent patient experience and journey through the department.

The post holder will support medical and other multidisciplinary colleagues in undertaking identified clinical tests and treatments. There will be day to day responsibility for some specialist clinics.

They will take responsibility for their own self-development to meet the needs of each clinic providing extended role practice.

Main duties of the job

To act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors and to be accountable for own clinical practice and professional actions at all times.

To ensure the smooth running of the Children’s Out Patient Department and all clinics and services this encompasses.

To maintain own skills and knowledge and demonstrate clinical excellence and high standards of practice to other staff.

Ensure that agreed nursing procedures are known and followed. 

Maintain a Professional Portfolio and responsibility for own professional development. Actively participate in clinical audits.

Provide clinical nursing expertise and supervision of all grades of staff within the Out Patient setting, to ensure a high standard of care.

Contribute to the assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, thus providing high standards of patient care at all times.

Ensure that the care given reflects the hospital and departmental philosophies, standards and protocols.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Act as an effective resource/advisor to colleagues, in the delivery of nursing care.

Ensure that nursing practice reflects current clinical developments and is based on sound evidence.

Promote a healthy, positive and safe environment for patients and staff.

Take responsibility for the day to day nursing organisation of the clinical area.

Participate in setting and reviewing standards for practice and evaluating outcomes as part of the clinical governance agenda

Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific development and competency Programmes. 

Able to identify learning needs in self, negotiating a Personal Development Plan recognising own limitations.

To undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary for the role following the Trust policy

Facilitate and take part in specialist clinics and take on extended roles ie Blood taking, ECGs, skin prick/ allergy testing, pre operative assessment clinic.

Administration of prescribed injections.

To be responsible for the ordering and safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications.

To promote and maintain effective communication both written and verbal.

Support the senior nurse in planning the staff duty rotas to meet the requirements of the needs of the department and clinics

Monitor and appraise the performance of staff within their sphere of responsibility.

Be aware of the budgetary requirements within their clinical areas of nursing.

Participate in regular staff meetings.
