Here at the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) you will join an innovative, forward-thinking team with the collective objective of providing first class rehabilitation to our patients.

As a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist at the NRC you will provide a high-quality Speech and Language Therapy service, developing knowledge and skills in the management of people with communication and swallowing difficulties within the facility as part of a dedicated Interdisciplinary team. You will act as an autonomous HCPC registered team member providing a high standard of assessment and treatment/management of patients, some of whom may have acute, complex and/or chronic presentations.

 Planning for the NRC is in its advanced stages, and due to open in 2026. This role may be temporarily based at our current unit, Linden Lodge, at City Hospital until we move.

Training and Quals

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification
  • Health Professions Council – License to Practice
  • Registered member of RCSLT
  • Evidence of successful completion of short courses related to client group

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post-graduate experience in specialist area including experience with working with
  • Well established knowledge of assessment tools for specialist group
  • Established knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrates effective ability to prioritise a large caseload.
  • Experience of goal setting

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills including explaining, negotiating, motivating and training.
  • Able to work as an integral member of the SLT and multi-professional teams, building relationships with patients/carers, and other staff.
  • Able to handle sensitive and confidential information and respond to people who are distressed or anxious.

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to interpret and evaluate complex information from a variety of sources using professional judgement to solve problems and make decisions where there are a range of options.

Planning and Organisation Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to plan, prioritise and organise own workload, including daily tasks and longer term strategic planning, despite interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Able to plan and organise the work of Assistant SLT and students.
  • Able to make decisions within own work role guided by broad policies and guidelines, supported by team leader/clinical lead and multi-professional team.

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed auditory discrimination, perceptual and transcription skills, whilst interpreting multi-sensory information.
  • Able to use a computer keyboard and relevant computer programmes

Other requirements specific to the role

Essential criteria
  • Able to travel to areas within and beyond the trust if required
  • Car driver with access to car insured for business use
