We are seeking appoint a highly motivated Locum Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist to join the friendly, supportive and dynamic team that forms the Anaesthetic Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.  

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to work autonomously in their field of expertise to fulfil the clinical and non-clinical duties within the agreed Job Plan. The appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients under his/her care and be responsible with Consultant colleagues for the provision of both comprehensive elective and emergency anaesthetic services. The appointee will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post according to the agreed Job Plan and give these priority at all times.

Working for our organisation

The paediatric anaesthetic department supports a significant acute and elective paediatric surgical workload.  Nottingham Children’s Hospital provides specialist and regional services which include neonatal surgery, paediatric oncology, including radiotherapy, trauma orthopaedics, major trauma, neurosurgery, spinal surgery, cleft lip and palate services, ENT, maxillofacial surgery and ophthalmology. Day case procedures are delivered in a dedicated suite, with 2 theatres.

This post will be in addition to the existing paediatric anaesthetic consultants. The appointments will offer an exciting opportunity to work with an enthusiastic team, to continue to develop the existing service, in particular augmenting delivery of emergency care and pre-operative assessment for elective surgery.

  • Higher professional degree Advanced Life Support Provider Postgraduate

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Training and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan, including on call work. Technical skills/competencies required for all aspects of the job plan. Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees. Specific training and experience in anaesthesia for subspecialty work according to job plan and for emergency surgery. Evidence that relevant clinical skills/knowledge have been maintained.
Desirable criteria
  • Specific training in communication skills Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors Anaesthesia fellowship in anaesthesia for upper abdominal or thoracics surgery

Teaching, audit and research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit. Able to teach and support junior staff effectively. Commitment to training.
Desirable criteria
  • Original Research Publications Higher teaching degree or qualification or training Evidence of organising and delivering teaching at under-graduate and post-graduate level Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role Diploma in Medical Education
