An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 1.0 WTE Clinical Psychologist to support the growing Major Trauma team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. 

 

The East Midlands Major Trauma Unit is one of the busiest trauma centres in the UK, with some of the best outcomes clinically. It has been established since 2012, but is now looking to add to the highly valued existing Clinical Psychology provision within this area.

 

The post holder will have a regular physical presence on the East Midlands Major Trauma Unit at Queens Medical Centre, in order to be physically available to support patients, their families & staff members on a face-to-face basis or at limited times, via telephone or video consultation. The service will be delivered in collaboration and consultation with senior Clinical Psychology staff, & Major Trauma Unit staff. Supervision will be provided by the highly experienced & supportive Consultant Clinical Psychologist already working within the Major Trauma Unit.

 

The Department is a large, growing, cohesive and highly specialist group of clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists committed to the unique value of clinical psychology in acute healthcare. We have excellent links with the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and the regional Clinical Psychology Doctorate Courses

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical, support, and consultation

·                  To provide staff support in Major Trauma, when needed, due to the distressing nature and / or circumstances of some patients’ traumatic injuries.

·                  To have a regular physical presence on the Major Trauma unit, in order to be physically available to support staff in a variety of ways, according to specific circumstances and staff-requirements.

·                  To have availability to support staff by phone or email.

·                  To plan and review ways of working with senior Psychology staff, MT staff and divisional managers.

·                  To help provide a coherent approach to MT staff support.

·                  To work in ways which are sensitive to the needs of staff from a wide range of racial, cultural and religious backgrounds.

·                  To offer direct clinical (psychological) care to MT patients, when appropriate.

·                  To offer clinical (psychological) care to family members of patients who are admitted to Major Trauma.

·                  Core hours are 9am- 5pm, Monday to Friday, but there may be the opportunity to accommodate a degree of flexible working, where appropriate.

·                  A physical presence in Major Trauma areas is a core part of the role including a readiness and ability to practise in infectious-disease circumstances and the use of PPE.

·         Where direct patient care occurs, the post-holder will assess, formulate, and offer direct and indirect intervention in collaboration with other clinical staff (typical problems may include reactive psychological conditions and acute cognitive or communication difficulties).

·         To assist in the provision of psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing to direct patient care.

·         To provide advice, consultation, supervision and training to other staff as appropriate.

·         To work autonomously as a Clinical Psychologist.

·         To provide specialist assessment, formulation, intervention, and support.

·         To communicate with staff about complex issues relating to circumstantial and systemic pressures.

·         To plan and prioritise own activities.

·         To provide specialised expert opinion, consultation and supervision to clinical staff.

·         To provide training, teaching and supervision to clinical psychologists and other NUH staff.

·         To work effectively with professionals with diverse professional backgrounds.

·         To work effectively with patients from a diverse range of cultural/ethnic backgrounds, understanding and respecting the impact of difference and diversity.

·         To engage in regular clinical supervision in accordance with good practice guidelines.

 

Communication

·           To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner.

·           To maintain the highest standards of record keeping and governance as will become necessary to the role.

Analytical and planning

·           To use appropriate conceptual frameworks and models to plan and review the available service(s).

Policy and Service Development

·           To contribute to considerations about next steps in the development of the service(s).

 

 

Research & Service Evaluation

 

·         To contribute to the development and evaluation of interventions, services, and policies through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit.

·         To undertake complex evaluation and audit with patients and colleagues within and across the service.

·         To provide supervision for research activities undertaken by other psychologists and staff as appropriate, including consultation and advice on a variety of research methods/design and data analysis.

 

Teaching, Training and Supervision

 

·         To disseminate psychological research and theory, and provide teaching and training on interventions, as required.

·         To maintain and develop skills in the area of professional pre- and post-graduate training and clinical supervision.

 

 

Management, Recruitment Policy and Service Development

·         To plan and prioritise own patient workload, service activities, appointments and personal CPD/supervision needs/activities in the best interests of the service being provided.

·         To exercise delegated responsibility for managing psychology materials and equipment.

·         To participate on service working parties as required.

·         To contribute to the systematic governance of psychological practice within the Trust.

 

Governance/Professional Responsibilities

 

·         To participate in initiating and developing relevant activities related to clinical governance/quality standards of practice in the Clinical Psychology & Neuropsychology Department.

·         To work within a recognised evidence base.

·         To work in accordance with Nottingham University Hospitals Trust practice guidelines, policies and standards and abide by the current Codes of Practice as outlined by the British Psychological Society, Division of Clinical Psychology, and the HCPC.

·         To participate in the annual appraisal system/Individual Performance Reviews.

·         To ensure own individual continuing professional development CPD arranged in consultation with the HoS for Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology.

·         To ensure the development, maintenance and dissemination of the highest professional standards of knowledge, practice through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programs and maintain an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines/competencies.

·         To receive regular appropriate clinical supervision.

·         To maintain an up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, issues and guidelines in relation to both the specific client group and mental health.

 

Administration

 

·         To maintain standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance.

·         To collect and supply requested activity data, leave, travel and sickness and maintain records for the Trust.

·         To attend meetings of the Clinical Psychology & Neuropsychology Department and other meetings within the Trust as required and to undertake duties arising from such meetings in keeping with the nature and grading of the post.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional doctorate or equivalent qualification in Clinical Psychology
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience as a Clinical Psychologist working in a staff support and / or patient setting.

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with individuals, staff administrators and managers about highly complex and sensitive matters in situations of potential conflict or psychological/emotional pain.
  • Experience of providing support and supervision to healthcare colleagues.
  • Ability to create an appropriate environment for clients / staff in a highly emotive situation and respond appropriately.

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Skills in the use of psychological assessment, intervention, and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Ability to integrate available highly complex clinical information into a coherent formulation and to apply it in treatment and clinical management.

Planning and Organisation Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of planning and organising own work time and responding to unforeseen situations as they arise.
