The Nottingham Paediatric Metabolic Service is undergoing an exciting period of expansion.

We are seeking a dynamic dietitian who has an interest in working in a specialist and learning-rich environment, who can demonstrate compassion and empathy for our children, young people and their families. The individual will be joining an expanding multi-professional team as we begin to collaborate with Leicester to form the East Midland’s Paediatric Metabolic Service. The successful candidate will hold a clinical caseload and will be responsible in developing and leading a team of Metabolic Dietitians based at Nottingham Children’s Hospital (NCH). This role involves regular working alongside the multidisciplinary team across the newly formed East Midlands Paediatric Metabolic Service. As a visible leader, you will be a role model for the Dietetic team ensuring high standards of quality care for patients and their families.

Main duties of the job

As a Clinical Specialist Dietitian, the post holder will be expected to work alongside the East Midlands Paediatric Metabolic Regional Lead Nurse in establishing and developing the service, encompassing; strategic planning, managing and provision of a highly specialist, clinically effective, safe and cost-effective Metabolic Dietetic service at NCH.  The post holder should demonstrate initiative and be imaginative in terms of moving the service forwards. In addition, they will provide regular expert opinion, advice and guidance to the wider metabolic multidisciplinary team, encompassing research and education into practice, demonstrating an evidence-based approach and an advanced clinical judgment acquired through professional expertise.

The Nottingham Children's Hospital (NCH) is based at the Queens Medical Centre campus and is part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). We provide In-patient and out-patient care for children up to the age of 19 years old.

With 97 beds, we care for around 40,000 children each year from Nottinghamshire and beyond, treating a full range of conditions, including planned and emergency treatment and surgery, Burns and Plastics, Neurological conditions, Oncology, Paediatric critical care, Renal conditions and transplantation, Gastroenterology, and Spinal and Orthopaedic care.

The Children’s Dietetic Therapy team at NCH is a friendly and supportive department who work closely alongside the wider MDT, providing excellent evidence based care and innovative ways of working.

Throughout NUH we have a diverse range of AHP and support staff who work together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to supported by our Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction.

To provide clinical leadership within the specialist service, through consultation and joint working with all bands of staff, in the management of complex patients, this will involve review of their clinical reasoning and treatment skills.

To maintain and develop high standards of patients care and facilitate and implement evidence based practice by ensuring implementation of standards set in relevant national guidance, specialist clinical group guidance and specialist relevant areas. Also by ensuring staff are informed of recent developments through attendance at research based conferences, relevant network meetings and postgraduate education and training courses.

To develop local pathways of care for specialist area patients

To evaluate the effectiveness of the service through service evaluation & clinical audit in liaison with the Therapy Services Manager and relevant stakeholders.

Where appropriate, offer extended scopes of practice so as to facilitate the optimal management of patients within a clinic setting (i.e. non-medical prescribing)

To ensure waiting list targets are maintained by initiating and developing new ways of working (e.g. telephone consultation, ‘opt-in’ appointments, video consultation).

To ensure high standards of clinical care within the section on issues pertaining to specialist area to own team and a wide range of disciplines (e.g. medical staff and the MDT) in line with the education and training strategy by:

To establish collaborative links with other local and national advanced practitioners and disseminate information and development.

To lead on and participate in clinical research projects that enhance patient care, evaluate service and clinical developments, at times in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Person specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Hons in Dietetics or equivalent
  • Full HCPC registration
  • Evidence of maintaining professional competence through CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the British Dietetic Association and the Specialist BDA Group
  • Non-medical prescribing course or willing to undertake this

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Require highly advanced / theoretical / practical knowledge and clinical reasoning skills for specialist area
  • Able to demonstrate the 4 AHP pillars: -Clinical effectives/ Leadership/ Teaching and education at undergraduate and postgraduate level/ Service development and research

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate and present highly complex information effectively, in written and verbal formats to individuals or large groups of more than 20 people
  • Able to influence Senior medical consultants, GP’s and Commissioners

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess, formulate a dietetic and nutritional diagnosis and plan patient management, using highly specialist clinical reasoning skills and a wide range of treatment options
  • Provide critical evaluation of service delivery and facilitate necessary change

Planning and Organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • To contribute to the overall service delivery with the multidisciplinary team in own work section/ department/ directorate.
  • To develop and evaluate the dietetic service in relation to Trust objectives and National guidelines.
