Complex Home Ventilation Nurse Specialist (Neurology)

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Band 7 Complex Home Ventilation Nurse Specialist (Neurology) to join our established specialist service on a 12-month secondment at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is a unique clinical role supporting adults with highly complex, long-term ventilation needs in the community, including patients with progressive neurological conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, some requiring tracheostomy ventilation.
The post holder will work autonomously across a wide geographical area, providing specialist assessment, clinical decision-making, patient and family support, education, and leadership, while working closely with multidisciplinary teams across hospital and community services.

- Manage a specialist caseload of patients requiring long-term non-invasive and invasive ventilation
- Undertake advanced clinical assessments and make autonomous clinical decisions
- Run independent nurse-led clinics and interpret diagnostic information
- Provide expert advice and support to patients, families, carers and professionals
- Support complex discharges, admission avoidance and hospital flow
- Deliver specialist education and training to hospital and community staff
- Participate in MDT meetings and contribute to service development and audit

- Deliver highly specialist, evidence-based care for patients with complex ventilation needs
- Act as a key point of contact and advocate for patients and families
- Maintain accurate clinical records in line with Trust policy
- Identify patients approaching end of life and support appropriate palliative care planning
- Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement and service development
- Work in line with Trust values, safeguarding, and information governance requirements
- Travel independently across a wide geographical area (full UK driving licence required)

Training and Qualifications

- • Current registration with appropriate professional body
- • Degree in health/nursing related studies
- Relevant post-reg study relevant to specialist pathway / willingness to undertake at master’s level
- Recognised teaching and assessing qualification / have completed teaching and assessing supervisor training. Evidence of leadership course
- Completion of all local competency packages or has undertaken WINW packages essential to role and specialty
- Research training / experience. Demonstrates and awareness of research principles and their application to clinical practice.

- Non-Medical Prescriber/willingness to undertake if relevant to the role.
- Master’s degree or equivalent or willingness to work towards/equivalent experience.
Experience

- • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in band 6 role and/ or working within critical care/ high dependency/ specialist respiratory units
- • Good understanding of mechanical ventilation (e.g. CPAP/ NIV/ TIV)
- • Significant post registration experience at band 6 or above, in appropriate clinical setting
- Demonstrates professional autonomy and effective decision making skills when managing caseload
- Experience in supervision of registered, non-registered staff and students
- Ability to manage clinical area/ward efficiently and effectively
- Experience in using relevant hospital IT systems
- Evidence of teaching and assessment skills, including the teaching of patients, families and colleagues

- Ability to work within a MDT; collaborating with, leading when required, negotiating with and influencing the work of others across a range of disciplines and on own initiative including the sharing of highly complex information and implementation of plans for Service development.
- • Ability to deliver presentations and chair meetings
- Ability to support colleagues, patients and relatives/carers in distressing circumstances
- • Experience of initiating and implementing change effectively, engaging stakeholders in the process.
