Job overview
NUH is looking to appoint a rotational Trust Grade doctor at ST4+ level to support our Neurology department at NUH. The post is offered as a fixed term contract from August 2026 to August 2027.
You will be based with Neurology teams at NUH and RDH, with rotations every 6-7 weeks in line with our trainee cohort. You will work closely with consultants at both Trusts, other resident doctors, and other Allied Health Professionals.
You will also contribute to the Neurology Out of Hours rota, therefore previous UK experience and Full MRCP (including PACES) is required.
Main duties of the job
Neurology:
The NUH Neurology team is a large team which deals with disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. Such conditions include epilepsy, migraine, dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, muscular dystrophy and stroke.
Our Neurology department has a strong research portfolio with an international reputation. We work in partnership with leading universities, including the University of Nottingham, industry and directly with patients and the public.
Inpatient, outpatient and daycase services are predominantly provided at QMC, however some clinics are based at City Hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Your duties and responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Assessment and provision of treatment for patients
- Liaison with other specialties
- Supervision of junior resident doctors and other Allied Health Professionals
- Undertaking clinical procedures including Lumbar Puncture, Ascitic Tap/drain, Pleural tap/drain, Central Venous Pressure Line insertion
- Receive referrals and ensure that correct pathways are adhered to
- Ensure patients are seen by the right person, in the right place and at the right time
- Participate in the on-call rota
Whilst in post, you can expect:
- To build upon postgraduate clinical experience
- To develop further expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient
- To gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission, the development of strategies which might provide an alternative to admission and identifying where early discharge would be safe and appropriate
- To further develop skills of history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing
- To attend weekly departmental teaching
- To master a number of procedural techniques
- To hone communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues
- To develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities
- To increasingly work towards independent practice at Registrar level, leading ward rounds, assessing patients, making decisions with Consultant support and supervision available at all times
Person specification
Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Full GMC registration with a Licence To Practise in UK
- Full MRCP including PACES
- Full ALS certification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Good and wide ranging recent experience of clinical medicine in an acute inpatient setting in a large/ tertiary hospital
- Evidence of completion of key competencies equivalent to IMT3 level
- UK experience of 12 months or more (not including clinical attachments)
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in neurology
Analytical and Judgement Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in audit/ QIP
- Experience of and commitment to teaching junior colleagues
Communication and Relationship Skills
Essential criteria
- Good standard of written English
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
- Ability to lead/ supervise multi-disciplinary team members
