Job overview

This is exciting time to join MSK Occupational Therapy at NUH. We have two fixed term or secondment opportunities for staff at either Band 5 or 6 level who want to specialise (or consider specialising)  within MSK either at the City Hospital and Queens Medical Centre campuses within Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

There are opportunities to work in trauma in-patients/major trauma/spines (QMC campus), in-patient/out-patient elective orthopaedics (City campus), in/out-patient burns and plastics (City campus), out-patient elective orthopaedic and rheumatology (Treatment centre, QMC campus), out-patient trauma (Treatment centre, QMC campus).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is committed to further improving their clinical skills and providing quality care to patients. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience of treating patients with a wide range of upper/lower limb trauma and elective orthopaedic conditions. You should also have experience in treating rheumatological conditions and burns and plastics.

We require a clinician with some knowledge of fabrication of splints and braces, complex case management, rehabilitation, excellent communication, effective leadership and someone who has a high regard for teamwork.

You will join a supportive and established team of occupational therapists, will have the opportunity to contribute to service develop within the wider MSK service and provide innovative practice.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role are provided in detail in the job description and person specification documents attached to this advert.

To summarise you will be required to:

  • Assess and provide appropriate treatment for a range of upper and lower limb elective/trauma orthopaedic, burns, plastics and rheumatology related conditions.
  • Assess for, fabricate and fit a range of upper and lower limb splints and braces.
  • Assess and treat patients to facilitate discharge and to support rehabilitation.
  • Working as an integrated part of the MDT, across specialties, including joint working.
  • Deputise for the band 7 team leader as appropriate.
  • Provide supervision to junior and support staff.
  • Contribute to student education.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive in-house MSK service teaching programme.
  • Promoting and support professional development of team members.
  • Working with band 7’s and other senior staff to develop the service and encourage evidence-based practice.
  • Manage own time and caseload efficiently and effectively.
  • Work flexibly including bank holidays and rostered weekends to support the in-patient service.

Essential criteria
  • BSC (HONS) OT
  • HCPC OT

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of working with a wide variety of patients in either an acute or rehabilitation in-patient setting or the community
  • • Experience of being a supervisee and supervisor
  • • Experience of contributing to the clinical education of less experienced staff or undergraduate OT students

Communication & Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills
  • • Able to demonstrate a commitment to team working

Analytical & Judgement

Essential criteria
  • • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of junior OT staff and support staff
  • • Independently work through the OT process with complex patients.

Planning & Organisational

Essential criteria
  • • Able to make judgements about the prioritising of caseloads when demand exceeds capacity and to support junior and support staff in this process
  • • Able to plan own clinical activity to meet clinical needs of patients when demand exceeds capacity

Physical

  • • Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes rehabilitation
