Are you an Paediatric  Registered Nurse, with significant ED experience ?

We have a substantive vacancy  for a  Band 6 clinical charge nurse in our Paediatric Emergency Department, to cover internal promotion, and welcome applications from people who meet the essential criteria. 

NUH is a major Trauma Centre covering the east Midlands and also the current home of the Channel 4 series "24 hours in A&E" Our busy ED is one of the largest in Europe and has its own separate Paediatric ED. 

We are looking for a  highly motivated individual, who has the ability to solve complex issues, whilst being a visible and supportive clinical advisor and leader.

This role will include full internal rotation covering days, nights, weekends and public holidays. 

Main duties of the job

This exciting role requires a high level of clinical expertise, along with the ability to manage a complex department alongside the paediatric nursing and clinical leadership team, negotiating flow into the Children Hospital.

Demanding and challenging, this role will engage all of your existing skills and build on them. It will provide the opportunity to become involved in complex process change and require high levels of staff engagement.  The senior nursing team not only drives and delivers patient care in a challenging environment but is looking for a dynamic individual to maximise the consistency and effectiveness of the service provided in the CYPED.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN Child Branch or RN adult within a dual emergency department and significant Paediatric experience
  • Possession of a mentor course
  • Competent in medicines management
  • APLS / EPLS certificate or equivalent
  • Continuing professional development/reflective profile
Desirable criteria
  • Educated to degree level
  • Completion of NUH ED scopes of professional practice or equivalent local competency package
  • Formal leadership and management training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • RN Child branch with post registration experience in an acute paediatric setting (Appropriate ward level experience with transferrable skills will be considered). Or a registered nurse with experience in a paediatric or shared adult/paediatric emergency department.
  • Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and post basic students
  • Experience of teaching & assessing
  • Evidence of personal professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an area that has undergone change/modernisation
  • Experience in service improvement

Communication and Relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take charge of a busy Emergency department whilst adhering to Trust and National targets
  • Able to work with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure high quality patient experience.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and use of IT skills e.g. emails PowerPoint and word.
  • Recognition of own level of competence and limitations and ability to communicate these to appropriate staff
  • Ability to constructively challenge others and formulate resolutions in conflict situations

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • High level of clinical knowledge and skill
  • Knowledge of Trust and Department initiatives and future planning
  • Able to identify potential challenges in the field of Emergency Care.
  • Ability to respond to problem situations and to ensure that effective interventions are put in place
  • Ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care
  • Ability to identify own learning needs.

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Assist the Sister/Charge Nurse to professionally develop a team of more junior staff by undertaking PDR’s & training needs analysis
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Ability to contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans
Desirable criteria
  • APLS/PILS instructor status.

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties, including manoeuvring patients
  • Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation
  • Competent and capable of using medical equipment
  • Able to undertake patient manual handling manoeuvres and non-patient manual handling manoeuvres

Other requirements specific to the role (e.g. be able to work shifts/on call)
