Job overview

We are seeking a Consultant in Paediatric Neurology to join Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), a leading provider of specialist paediatric services in the East Midlands. The post holder will be based at the Nottingham Children’s Hospital, contributing to a dynamic and multidisciplinary team delivering high quality care to children with neurological conditions. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a teaching hospital renowned for research, innovation, and a commitment to training future healthcare professionals.

The successful candidate will provide expert clinical care, participate in service development, and engage in education and research activities. You will work closely with paediatricians, allied health professionals, and nursing teams to deliver evidence based neurological care and improve outcomes for children and families.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management of children with neurological disorders across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings.
  • Participate in the on call rota and provide timely advice and support to the wider paediatric team.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical pathways and service improvements.
  • Contribute to the teaching and supervision of medical students, trainees, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Engage in research and audit activities to advance knowledge in paediatric neurology and improve patient care.
  • Maintain high standards of professional practice in line with GMC guidance and Trust policies.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and help deliver on national standards and local service priorities.

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register for Paediatric Neurology
  • Working towards achieving CCT at the time of the interview
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree- PhD, MD or equivalent

Professional Qualifications / Development

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH or equivalent

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Has completed training in Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurology as specified by the RCPCH Neurology CSAC, or training assessed to be equivalent by the GMC.
  • Experience and specialist training in either epilepsy or Neuromuscular disease
  • Experience and training in management of children with acute neurological disorders
  • Awareness and experience of child protection processes
Desirable criteria
  • Paediatric Neurology Fellowship
  • Neurodisability Experience
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors

Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
  • Able to delegate appropriately
  • Able to work within a team

Personal Skills / Qualities

  • Able to work flexibly in a changing health service

  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit

  • Higher teaching degree or qualification or training
