Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Nottingham Children's Hospital, for a full-time, permanent, Band 6 Service Manager.

We are looking for a pro-active, dynamic, experienced manager with excellent communication, organisational, administrative, waiting list and staff management skills with a proven track record of working in a demanding and fast paced environment.

The postholder will be responsible for ensuring effective operational and strategic planning, development and management of the paediatric surgical services to ensure compliance with national waiting time targets. To achieve this the postholder will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of Divisional Managers, Consultants, Nurses and Admin Teams to ensure the effective delivery of Trust, Directorate and Team objectives.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A Level standard of education, or equivalent, to include Maths and English
  • NVQ 3 in Management or equivalent
  • Comprehensive IT experience/qualification.
  • ILM Introductory Management Certificate or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma/degree holder

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience within the Healthcare sector at a management level including: project management, business planning, change management, multidisciplinary working, financial management, human resource management, performance management
  • Evidence of having achieved Challenging healthcare and business targets
  • Well developed IT skills to manage and report on complex performance management information systems.
  • Previous experience of managing staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of using Medway PAS, Bluespier and other NUH reporting systems.

Communications and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate business sensitive information
  • Able to provide complex or sensitive information verbally and in range of documentary forms including letters and reports
  • Secure agreement or co-operation from NHS staff at all levels of the organisation
  • Maintain sensitivity and empathy in communication with patients/clients
  • Day to day supervision of a team of staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a similar role within the NHS.
  • Experience of managing patient complaints

Analytical & Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to use judgement to make decisions on meeting business targets
  • Able to analyse a range of facts or situations, and compare a range of options
  • Skilled in highlighting business performance information
  • Proposes changes to practices, procedures for own area
  • Able to undertake audits of healthcare data
  • Knowledge and application of 6 and 18 week RTT pathways and cancer targets.

Planning & Organisation Skills

  • Demonstrates an ability to work on own initiative
  • Works within prescribed deadlines
  • Can formulate and organise complex activities, and programmes
  • Coordinating multi-disciplinary meetings
  • Able to place orders and maintain stock control
  • Able to exercise responsibility as authorised signatory for administrative processes
  • Manage and develop computer filing systems
  • Can train new members of staff in administrative systems
  • Able to undertake significant job responsibility for maintaining operational systems
  • Evidence of personal development relevant to post

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to sit for long periods at a desk.
  • Prolonged VDU usage.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of the importance of prompt timekeeping and good attendance at the workplace
  • Remains calm and co-operative under pressure or in difficult and uncertain situations
