Job overview

We are delighted to invite applicants to join our Urgent and Emergency Care directorate who are keen to develop their operational and leadership skills in a busy acute hospital.

Our acute medicine admissions unit is one of the largest in the country and you would be fully supported by a large clinical pharmacy team consisting of Medical admissions specialist clinical pharmacists, MMTs and MMA’s that deliver an excellent 7-day service.

The role involves leading the operational technical team to ensure the effective running of the ward pharmacy satellite dispensary and the management of the ward stock medication across our acute admissions unit which include B3, AMRA and Level 1.

The role involves joining a group of lead technicians whose role is to ensure we deliver a safe and high-quality Pharmacy Dispensary service.

The role will be based in the pharmacy dispensary on the B3 admissions ward at the QMC campus.

Main duties of the job

Under leadership and direction from the Acute Medicine Leadership Team:

•    To be the lead technician for service improvement and strategic development of the operational pharmacy services to the Acute Medicine areas.

•    To ensure the Pharmacy Dispensary service meets its quality, activity and financial targets.


•    To be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a safe, efficient, high quality, innovative and cost-effective operational ward service.


•    To ensure the effective running and day to day management and coordination of staff for the B3 pharmacy satellite dispensary.


•    To be responsible for the coordination and delivery of key underpinning activities of a Dispensary service: 
o    Training and Development: Provide training and assessment for Pharmacy Dispensary staff to ensure provision of a high quality service.

o    Stock Management: Manage stock levels and accuracy in the B3 Pharmacy Dispensary Lead and deliver regular stock counting plans, review stock holding and work with Pharmacy Stores & Distribution and Purchasing & Procurement teams to investigate and resolve stock discrepancies. 


•    Oversee the management and replenishment of the wards stock medication provided by the medicines management assistants on B3, AMRA and Level 1.


•    Involved in the recruitment and selection of Pharmacy Dispensary service staff


•    To line manage the Medicines Management Assistants within the Acute Medicine team.

•    Lead and manage the day-to-day running and coordination of the B3 Pharmacy Dispensary service based on the ward, including assurances for effective stock control, storage and security, planning and organising staffing requirements to ensure an appropriate skill-mix which is safe and adequate on a day-to-day basis.

•    Mange the day-to-day running and coordination of the ward’s medicines top up service for B3, AMRA and Level 1 and ensure ward medication waste management is maintained.

•    Participate in the dispensing and accuracy checking process within the Pharmacy Dispensary service. This includes the dispensing and safe handling of oral cytotoxics and controlled drugs. Manage the day-to-day stock holding in the B3 Pharmacy Dispensary.

•    Assist in the monitoring of Pharmacy Dispensary service key quality performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure quality, effectiveness and efficiency.

•    Be an active member of the pharmacy dispensary service Lead Technician group. A positive role model, providing mutual support to deliver local objectives and goals.

•    Liaise with the lead technician group and chief technician for the pharmacy dispensary service to review service standards and provisions and implement change where appropriate through project improvement work.

•    Assisting the Acute Medicine Pharmacy Team in the management and monitoring of controlled drugs within the Acute Medicine areas of QMC (B3, AMRA and Level 1 unit). Participating in the controlled drug retrieval of patients own medication from wards and expired or unused ward stock. Checking CD register balances and balance transfers to new CD registers. Help support the regular ward based CD audits and the pharmacy wide quarterly CD audits.

•    To be responsible for the local implementation of standards relating to medicines storage and security.

•    To participate and support in project works under the direction of the UEC Directorate Lead Pharmacist.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Pharmacy Technician registered (or has ability to register) with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Evidence of commitment to ongoing learning and personal development
Desirable criteria
  • Management and/or training qualifications, or equivalent experience demonstrated by acting in a role responsible for managing staff, services or resources

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Validated Pharmacy accuracy checker
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Pharmacy Dispensary Lead Technician role and responsibilities within a hospital pharmacy
  • Some supervisory or staff management experience
  • Experience of understanding ward stock management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience or knowledge of rota writing.
  • Experience in educating/ training others

  • Able to communicate information effectively, clearly and concisely to a wide range of staff, healthcare professionals and patients.
