Team Leader Physiotherapist - Respiratory Outpatients

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic physiotherapist to join the newly-formed Respiratory Outpatients Physiotherapy service at NUH as a Band 7 team leader. 

 

We are looking for an experienced band 6 or a current band 7 physiotherapist with a broad respiratory clinical skill set and a passion for service development/improvement. You will have strong leadership and management skills, with excellent teamwork and communication skills. Proven skills in quality improvement will be an advantage.

 

You will treat patients with bronchiectasis and dysfunctional breathing disorder in the outpatient setting. Our ambition is to extend the service to other chronic respiratory illnesses in the future. You will work alongside an experienced Highly Specialist COPD physiotherapist to co-lead innovative and person-centred development of an ever-changing service.

 

We are keen to help you progress your advanced clinical practice skills such as lung function and test doses of nebulised therapy, dependent on clinical need and your personal career goals.

 

You will contribute to the wider inpatient respiratory physiotherapy team and its out of hours service. You will have opportunities for development within Therapies through regular training and peer/line management supervision, and close support from B7 respiratory physiotherapists across medical and surgical specialties. 

Main duties of the job

  • Responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of the Respiratory outpatient (OP) physiotherapy service.
  • Responsibility for a clinical caseload of highly complex patients as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Ensuring high quality, evidenced based practice, service development and education underpin the service delivery.
  • Providing a supportive learning environment for team members under your direct management, including undertaking annual appraisals and managing health and wellbeing.
  • Contributing to the education and teaching of students, preceptees and therapy support workers, including training new staff for the weekend and respiratory roster when required.
  • Participating in the weekend respiratory service at NUH, City Hospital which incorporates Respiratory Medicine, Cystic Fibrosis Unit, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery & Critical Care.
  • Supporting the Respiratory Outpatients team through leadership and service development. This will include structured quality improvement work, in collaboration with Respiratory Medicine consultants and the wider physiotherapy outpatients service.
  • Leading by example, embedding NUH’s values and behaviours in everyday practice.

Physiotherapy and OT services are part of the Therapies, Outpatients and Phlebotomy Directorate, within Specialist Clinical Services at NUH. We are a diverse team of AHPs and support staff, employing over 800 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Permanent 37.5 hours Band 7 post
  • Core hours are worked Monday to Friday
  • Flexible working and part time will be considered (minimum 0.8 WTE)
  • Additional duties will include participation in on call and weekend working as well as a late shifts (1-9PM). Weekends are rostered with expected frequency of 1:4, an on-call average 1 per month and late shifts approximately 1-2 per month but all are dependent on service need and staffing levels

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Physiotherapy or equivalent
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of appropriate post graduate study and professional development within specialist area

Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant postgraduate experience, including a wide variety to rotations and experiences at Band 6 in relevant speciality
  • Experience of management of performance and sickness of staff and participation in recruitment of new staff of maximise workforce potential
  • Experience in evaluation of evidence-based practice, audit, service development and benchmarking
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS experience

Communication and relationship skills

  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate leadership ability
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers.
  • Feedback constructive criticism with tact and diplomacy in performance management of staff.

Essential criteria
  • Able to assess complex information, formulate a diagnosis and plan patient management using clinical reasoning skills and a range of treatment options
  • Able to solve problem within the team and make decision where there are a range of options, including clinical and strategic issues.
  • Able to collate information to identify trends and inform service development, e.g. use of spreadsheets, computer generated workload stats

Planning and organisational skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to organise and priorities workload of yourself and your team, including daily task, and longer-term planning despite interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Effective delegation and time management skills

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to handle and move complex patients using a way that promotes rehabilitation and is safe
  • Able to move and use medical devices

Other requirements

Essential criteria
  • Able to undertake out of hours duties including on-call, weekends and bank holidays
  • Able to travel cross campus and beyond the trust as needed
