Job overview

We are seeking a full-time Specialty Doctor with responsibility to support existing consultants in emergency spinal surgery for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for a fixed term appointment for 12 months renewable for a further six months subject to satisfactory performance.

The Job Description details the expected roles of the post, which historically has led to an excellent outcome for previous Associate Specialists, all of whom have gained excellent experience in Spinal Surgery and have gone on to secure substantive posts.

Applicants must be Spinal fellowship trained and fully registered with the GMC, and on the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of attaining specialist registration at the time of interview.

Please see attached job description and person specification for further details.

Main duties of the job

A full range of spinal emergency patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.

Supporting Consultant colleagues with a comprehensive elective and emergency spinal service. Including supporting consultant on-call rota, outpatient clinics, contributing to MDTs and provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department.

These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service.  If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her colleagues and the Trust.

The person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times

Governance and Audit

Appointees will be supported to undertake an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence-Based Practice.

Working for our organisation

The CSSS is based within Queens Medical Centre of Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust. NUH is a large university hospital trust, the regional Major Trauma Centre, and is a tertiary referral unit for all aspects of complex spinal pathology. The CSSS is a recognised AOSpine Training Centre and is the only spinal unit in the UK with 6 Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) approved and certified advanced fellowship posts. The team covers all aspects of spinal surgery with special emphasis on deformity (paediatric and adult), in addition to a busy spinal trauma and tumour practice. We are a very friendly department with close collaboration between the consultants and colleagues from other disciplines.

Within the CSSS, we have a research team with a trials coordinator, data entry clerks and research nursing staff. The unit runs a number of commercial and non-commercial studies in addition to a project-bank with support from the senior staff. Fellows are expected to complete at least one project culminating into a publication per year. Interested fellows can also apply for a higher academic degree (DM/PhD) through the University of Nottingham and can be mentored academically in house or in collaboration with a number of distinguished basic sciences academics. Journal club meetings, research meetings and formal teaching seminars are common practice within the unit and run on a programmed basis.
