Trust Grade Registrar - Vascular Surgery

Trust Grade Registrar (ST3+)

Job overview

NUH is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Trust Grade doctor at ST3 level or above to support our Vascular Surgery department.

This is an exciting opportunity to get excellent experience in Vascular Surgery with exposure to emergency and elective services. You will work closely with consultants, other junior doctors and multi-disciplinary teams.

The post holder will contribute to the 1:8 on-call rota at QMC and should therefore have completed core surgical training (or equivalent), have full MRCS, ALS and have experience working within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The NUH Vascular department is the regional vascular tertiary referral unit. In addition to being a hub for complex elective vascular (including endovascular) referrals, we also deal with a substantial load of the regional vascular emergencies.

We are engaged in performing complex vascular surgery including open and endovascular operations and have close links with Interventional Radiology colleagues. Nottingham was the first Trust in the UK to perform endovascular surgery and continues to be a driver for this type of surgery. There are weekly MDTs where patients are discussed with various colleagues from around the Trust.

Working for our organisation

With over 19,000 staff, we are one of the biggest employers in the city with a central role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our local population. We play a leading role in research, education and innovation.

Come and join our wonderful team at NUH. We are big believers in diversity and welcome new ideas to help develop our team in order to deliver world class healthcare to the vast patient populations we serve. With endless personal development opportunities available, at NUH we will endeavour to turn your job into a career!

We particularly welcome applications from people who identify as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, or Disabled, as we are striving to be better represented at NUH.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will support various aspects of this busy service, with a commitment to an out of hours rota. The post holder will attend clinics, theatre sessions and ward rounds as per allocation in a weekly firm timetable.

In addition, there is a local departmental teaching programme which you would be expected to attend and contribute to.

Although this is not a training post it should be possible for an enthusiastic doctor to map their experiences to many of the core curriculum programme competences as all aspects of the syllabus are relevant to this attachment.

We encourage our doctors to involve themselves in audit and research. You would be expected to make yourself familiar with the processes of the audit cycle and to assess the role of audit in clinical governance and in improving patient care. Supervision for projects will be available, and support may also be available from hospital audit departments.

Post holders can expect to;

•    Build upon post graduate clinical experience
•    Master a number of procedural techniques
•    Further develop experience and expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient
•    Further develop experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of  conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission
•    Hone communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues
•    Increasingly work towards independent practice at Registrar level, leading ward rounds, assessing patients, making decisions etc. with Consultant support and supervision available
•    Develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities
