Job overview

The stroke service at SFH is based at King’s Mill Hospital (KMH) and is an all-inclusive model covering hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation services, as well as the Integrated Community Stroke Service. All of these are under the same management team, sharing team members, clinical protocols and governing structures.

Our Stroke Service admits approximately 800 patients with confirmed stroke each year. An out of hours thrombolysis service in provided in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). 

A high risk TIA service runs 5 days per week with dedicated same day carotid Doppler and MRI imaging to provide carotid endarterectomy within 48 hours as needed. At weekends the service is provided by NUH.

Main duties of the job

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Working for our organisation

Our inpatient services are based at King’s Mill Hospital, offering superb facilities for both stroke inpatients and outpatients services.

An integrated unit on Ward 53 and 54, is the hub for hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation stroke services. Four monitored beds comprise the hyper-acute bay and the senior stroke nurses covering are all NIHSS certified and are available 24/7 to admit patients directly from A&E as well as assessing potential thrombolysis patients. The remaining 25 beds on the stroke ward are for on-going acute management of our stroke patients and on-going rehabilitation, which includes a therapy treatment area.

There is a dedicated Integrated Community Stroke Service (ICSS) who provides intensive rehabilitation within the community. This is supported by physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, clinical physiology and nurse and rehabilitation support workers. On average 40% of the patients admitted to the stroke unit are discharged to the ICSS.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Must be fully registered with GMC with a licence to practice
  • Must have completed at least four years’ full time post graduate training (or equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or have equivalent experience and competencies

Further training & experience

Essential criteria
  • Progress towards or attainment of College exams
  • Experience within the specialty in the UK
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with audit, teaching or research/critical review of literature essential
  • Previous experience in a multidisciplinary setting
