Job overview
We are looking to recruit a specialist in orthogeriatrics who is committed to excellence in Geriatrics to join a pro-active team with an excellent clinical reputation in providing a range of services within the hospital and the community. Our team delivers a high quality needs related service to frail and older patients wherever they are. The team uses their knowledge and experience to lead and influence the development of services for the frail and elderly both within the Trust and in the community. You will also have an opportunity to gain valuable experience of service transformation and development.
The successful candidates will be joining a well organised department providing a wide range of services at specialty and sub-specialty level. We work together collaboratively and supportively and we are always looking to improve the care for frail, elderly patients across the organisation.
Main duties of the job
- To assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient orthogeriatrics service and support Trust and Network, in the aim to provide the best possible care to patients
- Provision of a service, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department
- Cover for colleagues' authorised absences
- Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in the consultant on-call rota for Geriatrics
- Participate in service development and business planning
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff
- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally
- Participating in medical audit, Clinical Governance processes and CPD
- Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.
The post holder, along with the rest of the team, will be required to provide a comprehensive medical review of all non-elective admissions to trauma and orthopaedics, who are aged 60 and above. This will include patients with fractured neck of femur, other fragility fractures, patients presenting with falls, and those with medical co-morbidities. The focus will be peri-operative medical optimization, falls review, bone health, and management of medical conditions as needed

Essential criteria
- Full registration (with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Full MRCP
Desirable criteria
- Geriatric Medicine SCE
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to work autonomously to a level of defined competencies within Geriatric medicine and be an expert decision maker having overall responsibility for patient care.
- Must have completed at least twelve years full time post graduate training (or equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) with a minimum of six years including Geriatric Medicine and associated relevant specialties, at Middle Grade level.
- Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees.
- Previous experience in a multidisciplinary setting

- Experience within the specialty in the UK
Management & administrative experience

- Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload

- The potential to develop management and leadership skills
Teaching

- Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role

- Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
- Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
- Ability to participate in specialty out of hours rota (weekends)
