Job overview

The Buckinghamshire Adult Autism Diagnostic and Intervention Service is seeking an enthusiastic autism-aware clinician in Bucks Autism Reasonable Adjustments (BARA) based at the Whiteleaf centre in Aylesbury. We are keen to attract applications from social workers or occupational therapists in particular, to complement the existing skill mix. There is one full time post available, with one additional full time colleague in post. We would be happy to consider applicants who wish to work part time and can consider flexible working requests.

You will have a passion and commitment to improving the care and experiences of autistic adults in mental health community and inpatient services and a knowledge of the reasonable adjustments needed. You will have experience of working with autistic adults in a professional clinical role. You will have a good understanding of the needs of this client group and ways in which generic mental health clinicians can be supported to improve the care they provide.

The role will involve close working with community and inpatient mental health clinicians and teams, using consultancy and training, to share skills and knowledge. You will also work directly with some autistic service-users, when this is indicated and when resource allows. You will have experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team and of theories and techniques that can improve outcomes for autistic people using mental health services. 

Main duties of the job

  • Provide person-centred reasonable adjustments to enable autistic individuals to access mental health community and inpatient pathways 
  • Work collaboratively with professionals within Oxford Health Adult Mental Health Services and Buckinghamshire Council to support autistic adults 
  • Deliver specific interventions as part of the service user's overall care plan, including emotional regulation, sensory needs plans, and joint assessments 
  • Participate in care planning meetings, multi-agency meetings, and other relevant discussions to ensure the needs of autistic individuals are met 
  • Offer training and support to Oxford Health services and key stakeholders to enhance their understanding of autism and the necessary reasonable adjustments

The ability to travel independently between sites within the Trust is essential for this role.

  • Knowledge of legal frameworks applicable to autistic people

Qualifications

  • Relevant core professional qualification and registered with the appropriate professional body (NMC, Social Work England, or HCPC registered)
  • Previous post-registration experience relevant to the post
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching/mentorship post-registration qualification
  • Degree in relevant subject

Experience

  • Ability to support autistic people on an individual and group basis
  • Experience of working in community and inpatient settings
  • Working with individuals who challenge
