Specialty Doctor, Ruby Ward
NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor
Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has been rated as Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
We are a responsive and innovative Foundation Trust that places our values of Caring, Safe and Excellent at the heart of everything we do. We take great pride in our staff and believe that investing in you is key to us achieving our vision of outstanding care delivered by outstanding people.
We work with a wide range of partner organisations to deliver care and support to people in their own homes and from a number of hospitals and community bases. We focus on delivering care as close to home as possible.
Job overview
A 0.8wte speciality doctor post is currently available on Ruby ward (17-bedded acute female inpatient ward). The post-holder will work alongside 1 full time Consultant on Ruby ward and the multidisciplinary inpatient team.
Ruby ward along with Sapphire ward (20-bedded acute male in-patient ward) are the acute admission wards for the psychiatric service of Working Age Adults in Buckinghamshire. In addition, from time to time, they take admissions for older patients, either because they remain open to the Adults of Working Age Service or because they present challenging behaviour more appropriately managed on these wards. Ruby ward has a fully staffed multidisciplinary team. There is Place of Safety attached to the ward.
There is also a 20-bed rehabilitation ward on-site (Opal Ward).
Main duties of the job
Day-to-day management of the inpatients on Ruby Ward at the Whiteleaf Centre Aylesbury. This will include contribution to ward rounds (including typing contemporaneous clinical notes into the electronic patient records), CPA review and discharge planning meetings, and Mental Health Act Tribunals. This will be under the clinical supervision of the dedicated inpatient consultants from the team.
Liaison with the CRHT and CMHT to ensure co-ordinated clinical care of patients.
Providing timely written correspondence to relevant professionals, documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records system – training will be provided where needed.
Work collaboratively with other agencies, in particular liaison with staff from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the unit. The teams most commonly involved with this will be the CRHTT, Community Mental Health Teams, Early Intervention, Opal Ward Rehabilitation Unit and Ashurst Ward Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit.
Active commitment to delivering the Trust’s clinical governance agenda.
Contribution to developing and delivering improved clinical services as outlined in the National Service Framework for Mental Health.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the collection of data as required by the Trust and other relevant agencies. This includes the timely recording of clinical activity data, and participation in clinical audit -with appropriate administrative support.
The post holder will be expected to participate in and attend the local training programme for junior doctors.
The post holder will normally cross-cover with the trainee doctors and speciality doctors on Sapphire, Ruby and Opal for annual leave, study leave and brief periods of sickness absence.
The post holder will administer ECT on a rota with the other specialty doctors and doctors in training. This will be supervised by the lead ECT consultant and appropriate training will be given (depending on prior experience). Attendance at the ECT suite will be on a supernumerary basis alongside the lead consultant until the post holder has achieved the required competencies to work without direct supervision (as set out by the RCPsych).
The post holder will also have the opportunity to receive basic training in rTMS and will then be expected to provide occasional medical cover for the rTMS service in the consultant’s absence. This will usually involve briefly reviewing patients’ mental states at the start of the week and writing an rTMS prescription.
