Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Education and Training 

• Deliver approved training programmes for delegated healthcare tasks, including seizure management, emergency medication, anaphylaxis, enteral feeding, and other agreed clinical procedures. 

• Adapt delivery to the learner and setting while maintaining the content, standards, and learning outcomes of approved materials. 

• Demonstrate clinical procedures and assess learners against approved competency frameworks, escalating concerns or complex decisions to an appropriately experienced practitioner. 

• Provide refresher, update, and remedial training within agreed pathways. 

• Support parents and carers to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required to undertake agreed healthcare tasks safely. 

• Contribute to CCN induction, clinical skills updates, study sessions, and student learning within the post holder’s competence. 

• Promote a positive, inclusive, and psychologically safe learning environment. 

• Evaluate sessions, gather learner feedback, and identify themes for review by the Education and Training Lead. 

Coordination and Record Keeping 

• Respond to allocated training requests and consult with families, schools, care providers, agencies, and clinical colleagues to arrange delivery. 

• Check that current care plans, prescriptions, risk information, and appropriate equipment are available before child-specific training or assessment. 

• Maintain accurate training, attendance, and competency records on approved systems in accordance with information governance requirements. 

• Monitor outstanding actions for allocated learners, escalating delays, risks, or non-compliance promptly. 

• Support collection and validation of activity, demand, capacity, quality, and outcome data. 

• Assist with the maintenance of training resources, equipment and stock, reporting defects or shortages. 

• Ensure contemporaneous documentation in line with Trust policy and NMC professional standards. 

 Clinical Responsibilities 

• Work within the NMC Code, current registration, level of competence and approved Trust policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines. 
• Maintain relevant clinical competence through supervised practice, continuing professional development and regular clinical work as agreed. 

• Deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care under an individualised plan of care when rostered to support CCN clinical activity. 

• Recognise deterioration, safeguarding concerns, unsafe practice, or limitations in learner competence and take immediate action in line with escalation procedures. 

• Confirm that delegation is appropriate only within approved governance arrangements; refer complex, unusual or high-risk training and competency decisions to a Band 6 or Band 7 practitioner. 

• Communicate effectively with children, young people and families, using developmentally appropriate and accessible approaches. 

• Maintain infection prevention, medicines management, moving and handling and lone-working standards relevant to the role. 

 Communication and Partnership Working 

• Work collaboratively with the Education and Training Lead, Clinical Educators, locality teams and other members of the Children’s Community Nursing Service. 
• Liaise professionally with education settings, care agencies, families, acute services and partner organisations to support coordinated training and safe care. 

• Explain clinical information clearly, sensitively and without jargon, checking understanding and responding appropriately to questions or anxiety. 

• Raise issues affecting training quality, learner competence, child safety or service capacity through the agreed governance route. 

• Contribute to team meetings, clinical supervision, and service learning. 

 Quality and Professional Development 

• Use approved lesson plans, competency documents, and evidence-based resources, identifying content that requires review. 

• Participate in audit, evaluation and quality-improvement activity relating to delegated healthcare task training. 

• Report incidents, near misses, complaints, and risks in accordance with Trust procedures and contribute to learning actions. 

• Participate in appraisal, clinical supervision, and an agreed personal development plan. 

• Maintain statutory and mandatory training and professional revalidation requirements. 

• Undertake other duties appropriate to the band and role as agreed with the line manager.
