POST OF:      Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist interest in complex hand and wrist surgery

A post as a Consultant Orthopaedic hand and wrist surgeon is available now at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

The appointment is on a substantive basis, applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

Candidates are highly recommended to visit the department and hospital and meet the team.

We are currently expanding our Upper Limb team substantively - we have an immediate vacancy for for a consultant orthopaedic hand and wrist surgeon.

The appointee will be expected to work flexibly within the Upper Limb team and participate in the multi-disciplinary team in the management of patients with complex orthopaedic problems.  They will be expected to participate in the on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a 1 wte Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon to join our existing enthusiastic and experienced team of Upper Limb surgeons.

The hand and wrist service is at the forefront of innovation and works closely with academic and industry partners to advance implant designs and the evidence base for arthroplasty techniques, infection management, and musculoskeletal science. The hand and wrist team is involved in many innovative initiatives to enhance the provision of hand and wrist surgery and we anticipate the postholder will work closely with academic colleagues to build the evidence base for orthopaedic procedures and support the development of novel interventions.

The service is closely aligned with the Nuffield Department of Trauma, Orthopaedics & Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal sciences at the University of Oxford, with many opportunities for collaboration.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, or within 6 months of CCT date at date of interview OR on GMC Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
  • FRCS (Tr&Orth) or equivalent
  • General training in Orthopaedics
  • GMC Registration Full registration and licence to practise
Desirable criteria
  • D.Phil/PhD in topics related to the post
  • British or equivalent Diploma in Hand Surgery
  • 12 month Fellowship in Hand and Wrist Surgery
  • Training focussed on bone infection surgery.

Work Experience

Essential criteria
  • General training in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery to specialist level or equivalent
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
  • Evidence of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team managing bone infection
Desirable criteria
  • Current consultant-level practice in a Tertiary Centre – with experience/evidence of independent management of complex bone infection
  • Experience delivering ultrasound guided injections.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
  • Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management. Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS.
  • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Basic IT skills
  • Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate students and orthopaedic trainees. Experience as clinical supervisor to resident medical staff.
  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
  • Experience as clinical supervisor to resident medical staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of formal leadership training.
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical management and participation in Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of experience with electronic patient record and database administration and management
  • Experience in innovation, design and development of medical technology
  • Evidence of developing and delivering teaching programmes at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Evidence of establishing and delivering a new service or pathway.
