Main duties of the job

We are seeking a skilled and proactive General Practitioner with a Special Interest (GPwSI) in Urology to join our hospital outpatient urology team, with a particular focus on the assessment and management of patients presenting with haematuria. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside urology consultants, nurse specialists, and allied health professionals to provide high-quality diagnostic and clinical care within the outpatient setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage haematuria outpatient clinics, providing specialist assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients referred with visible and non-visible haematuria.
  • Perform diagnostic flexible cystoscopy procedures as part of the haematuria assessment pathway, ensuring patient safety and adherence to best practice protocols.
  • Conduct comprehensive patient consultations, including clinical history, physical examinations, and ordering appropriate investigations.
  • Interpret diagnostic results, initiate management plans, and liaise with urology consultants regarding complex cases or need for further intervention.
  • Coordinate patient care pathways to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment, improving patient outcomes and reducing unnecessary inpatient admissions.
  • Document consultations, cystoscopy findings, and management plans accurately in hospital electronic patient record systems.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss complex cases and service development where appropriate.
  • Support audit and quality improvement projects related to haematuria and outpatient urology services.
  • Educate and counsel patients regarding their diagnosis, treatment options, and lifestyle modifications.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Fully qualified and registered General Practitioner with current GMC registration and license to practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience working within hospital outpatient urology clinics.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Competence in performing diagnostic flexible cystoscopy, with proven skills in patient preparation, procedure execution, and post-procedure care.
Desirable criteria
  • Formal training or certification in urology or relevant specialist areas.
