THIS POST IS FIXED TERM FOR UPTO 12 MONTHS DUE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE
The Quality Assurance Laboratory at the Welsh Blood Service has a vacancy for a Medical Laboratory Assistant. The tenure of the post is fixed term for 12 months.
The Welsh Blood Service is proud of its partnerships with blood donors from across Wales, to provide the best quality services for patients in Wales.
The post offers the successful applicant the opportunity to work in the Quality team; we welcome candidates with a keen interest in science, laboratory, and quality-focussed employment.
This role is part of the essential support team in the Laboratory; The post holder will be responsible for working in the support team to prepare Quality Control Samples and run initial analysis on the various technologies in the Laboratory. Environmental sampling to monitor the cleanliness of critical areas and equipment and calibration and validation of cold chain monitoring systems.
The successful applicant will work to a level to ensure all processes meet the requirements of the UK guidelines for Blood Transfusion and the EU Directive as inspected by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
There will be a potential requirement to work variable shift patterns according to the exigencies of the service. This will include working Bank Holidays.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will undergo in-service training to allow them to acquire the necessary technical skills & competencies to perform routine technical tasks associated with the Department. Post holders will work on a rotation in each of the sections that make up the department. This includes preparing quality control samples and analysing then using the automated Systems in the department. Calibrating equipment, preparing thermal profile test equipment and Bacterial Environmental Monitoring.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- GCSE English and Maths (A – C grade) or equivalent
- Knowledge of using computers and using basic IT programs

- Knowledge of GMP /GDP
- Knowledge of Quality Control
- Able to undertake the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Level I
