Job overview
An exciting opportunity has risen in the Red Cell Immunohaematology laboratory at the Welsh Blood Service for the role of Senior Biomedical Scientist (BMS).
We are looking for a transfusion specialist BMS with strong blood group serology background to join our dynamic team responsible for the provision of the all Wales Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) reference service.
The successful candidate will provide scientific leadership and support the Head of RCI with the day to day management as well as the strategic direction of the department.
They will also be required to demonstrate compassionate leadership skills and proactively manage competing demands in a fast changing environment.
Main duties of the job
Key aspects of this role include:
· Leadership and direction on the day to day activities of the laboratory and on complex specialist scientific and technical processes.
· Training and competency of all RCI staff.
· Laboratory performance as monitored by Key Performance Indicators.
· Promoting the safety and quality culture and performing quality activities including incident investigations, implementation of corrective and preventative actions, validation, improvement of laboratory processes etc.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Degree in Biomedical Science or other Biological science
- Registered as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council
- Specialist Biomedical Scientist qualification in Transfusion or equivalent level of specialist training
- Masters of Science in Transfusion or relevant science field
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working in a Blood Service or hospital Transfusion service
- Evidence of participation in service developments and new initiatives
Desirable criteria
- Experience of managing people
Skills and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Able to plan and undertake evidence based complex service development projects
- Able to exercise expert judgement when dealing with highly complex scientific, technical and clinical issues
- Able to achieve targets and objectives within a demanding and busy environment against challenging deadlines
