Job overview
The Radiology Medical Secretary provides an efficient and comprehensive professional secretarial service to the Consultant Radiologists and Radiology Fellows. To exercise initiative and independent judgement whilst maintaining a high level of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times.
Under current Home Office Immigration Rules, this role does not meet the UK Visas and Immigration criteria and the position is not therefore eligible for sponsorship. Applications from candidates that require skilled worker sponsorship will NOT be shortlisted.
Main duties of the job
Full and comprehensive secretarial support for Radiologists and Radiology Fellows as well as support for for Radiology Leads.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Typing of letters
- Typing of imaging reports
- Diary management
- Arranging meetings, including arranging transport if required.
- Liaising with professionals both internal and external to Radiology
- Prioritisation of workload (both personal and for consultants)
- Operating the Radiology Systems to a high standard
- Working closely with the Radiology Leads and secretarial team to provide support

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To work as part of a secretarial team providing cross cover in the absence of other Radiology Medical Secretarial staff, thus maintaining a highly efficient secretarial service to the Consultant Radiologists/Radiology Fellows.
To develop and acquire detailed knowledge and understanding of medical terminology throughout sub-specialities, being able to undertake typing of radiology reports (all imaging modalities) to RSH Stage III standard through audio word processing, shorthand dictation and the RIS (Radiology Information System).
Distribute radiology reports as necessary to the relevant healthcare professions
Deal with frequent interruption and prioritise personal and consultant workloads whilst maintaining a high level of concentration.
Type and distribute summary and letters for Consultant Radiologists
Communicate with patients in a professional and helpful manner, showing due empathy particularly when dealing with anxious/distressed patients.
Become a proficient Superuser on Radiology Systems

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Completion of Medical Secretaries Course (AMSPAR diploma) or NVQ Level 3 in Administration or equivalent
- 4 GCSE’s or equivalent
- RSA Level 3 typing or equivalent
Experience

- 3+ years experience in medical secretarial role
Desirable criteria
- >5years experience in NHS setting
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of Radiology specific terminology

- Understanding of diagnostic and treatment pathways
- Specific knowledge of MSK/orthopaedic pathways
