Consultant Urological Surgeon with interest in Paediatric Urology
NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant
Job overview
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant Urological Surgeon with a specialist interest in Paediatric Urology. The post will be predominantly based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, with responsibilities extending across both hospital sites.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive and collaborative multidisciplinary team delivering high‑quality urology services to a wide and diverse catchment population. The post has been designed to strengthen and further develop urological care across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid‑Wales.
The successful candidate will bring expertise in General Urology alongside a subspecialist interest in Paediatric Urology.
Contribution to an out of hours on call rota is core to this role.
Main duties of the job
- Provide independent consultant level care for patients, working alongside the wider consultant body to ensure high-quality continuous management.
- Manage patients with a full range of urological conditions, delivering both elective and emergency care autonomously. This will include providing out-patient and day case activity to support care of children and young people.
- Contribute actively to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities, and support the education and supervision of junior medical staff and other staffing groups that are involved in patient care.
- Undertake administrative responsibilities required to support safe and effective clinical practice.
- To develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
- To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
- To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
- To follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
Working for our organisation
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.
Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury which are located 20 minutes’ drive apart. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.
Our Poppy’s Promise Commitment
We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team — clinical or non-clinical — plays a vital role in ensuring that patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times.
We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words, but through their actions: by listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising individual needs, feelings, and circumstances of those in our care.
Effective communication is central to safe and high-quality healthcare. We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explain information in a meaningful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding.
By joining our team, you are committing to uphold these values — ensuring that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction, every day.
