Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

Knowledge of Relevant speech, language, communication and dysphagia assessments, interventions, and techniques how to evaluate their relevance and effectiveness.
Knowledge of National policies and procedures relevant to Children's Speech and Language Therapy and to Children and Young People's Education.
Knowledge of Safeguarding procedures and their implementation in practice.
Knowledge of nationally recognised training and coaching packages of care for parents and other professionals working with children with SLCN.
An ongoing awareness of recent developments in practice and research including National guidance.
Understanding of clinical governance and risk management and their implications for the service.
Excellent organisation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills for a wide audience of children and adults.
Excellent analytical and reflective skills.
Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills.
Show competency in the use of relevant IT tools including those appropriate for clinical use.
Specifically for Highly Specialist SLT in neonatal care.
Awareness and knowledge of neonatal specific evidence base and supporting approaches such as baby friendly initiative and trauma informed care.
To have skills and knowledge in neuroprotective and developmental care and family integrated care to support neonates and their parents/carers.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria

Holds recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent.
Holds Health Professions Council licence to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist.
Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Evidence of completion of relevant short courses and continuing professional development in this specialist area.
Holds post-graduate qualification in paediatric dysphagia or is able to participate and complete a post graduate qualification in paediatric dysphagia

Experience

Essential criteria

Experience at post-graduate level with a range of speech, language communication difficulties in children.
Significant experience of working with children and young people with a range of special educational needs.
Experience at post-graduate level of working in multidisciplinary teams to assess the needs of children and families.
Experience at post-graduate level of using a range of assessments and assessment processes.
Experience at post-graduate level of delivering and evaluating relevant training and coaching programmes.
Experience of data gathering methodology and participation in clinical audit.
Experience in developing, programming, and evaluating the use of low- and high-tech communication aids.

As a Senior Assessor, you have the opportunity to focus on delivering direct care. Furthermore, if you have the relevant experience and skills, you can take on an additional responsibility. We limit this to one responsibility to allow for focused time on that topic, rather than having your time stretched too thinly. When taking on an additional responsibility, your case volume is reduced, making time available for this focused time.

For Senior Assessors, additional responsibility options include supporting more complex cases, ensuring quality assurance, providing training, facilitating family engagement, and contributing to pathway development.
