Job overview

As a Consultant in Acute/General Medicine with Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within our innovative Virtual Ward Service. You will provide clinical leadership, oversee the management of patients with acute and long-term conditions, and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to deliver care in community settings.

This role combines direct clinical care, service development, and education, offering the opportunity to shape the future of acute medical services outside the traditional hospital environment. You will be instrumental in supporting the Trust’s vision to provide accessible, holistic care closer to patients’ homes, while also contributing to quality improvement and staff development initiatives.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical leadership for the Virtual Ward, working with a skilled multi-professional team.
  • Deliver expert care for patients with acute and long-term conditions, both remotely and face-to-face.
  • Support service development, quality improvement, and staff education.
  • Collaborate with acute and community partners to deliver seamless care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP UK or equivalent.
  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: - Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) or - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad exposure to medical diseases and their comprehensive management (acute and long-term conditions).
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team

Skills / Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Keeps up to date with current research and best practice in the individual’s specific area of practice, through appropriate continuing professional development activities and their own independent study and reflection.
  • Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills.

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff
  • Knowledge and application of effective communication strategies in distressing and challenging situations. For example the management of palliative care interventions, crisis management.
  • Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
