Job overview

 A exciting opportunity has arisen at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust for a Lead in Cardiac Devices in the Cardio-respiratory Department.                                                                                                   

The Cardio-respiratory Department has a base at both hospital sites with Cardiac Diagnostics based predominantly at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. We are shortly opening a third diagnostic centre at Hollinswood House as part of the national  Community Diagnostic Centre programme.

We require a highly skilled and driven Lead Physiologist for our increasingly busy Cardiac Device implant and follow-up service. They will be responsible for working with the Head of Service  as part of the core management structure of the department . Implementing  process and protocols, in line with BHRS and GIRFT recommendations across the Cardiac Device service for Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

Main duties of the job

Key Roles

  • Responsible for overseeing the management of technical resources efficiently and effectively, ensuring the smooth running of a quality service to all patients.
  • Management and planning of the further development of cardiac devices services across the Trust.
  • Responsible for the quality of the cardiac devices service provision, including audit, research, and development, procurement and quality assurance of all equipment.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective resource and HR management across the services ensuring appropriate capacity to meet clinical demand, with a focus on inpatient flow.
  • Responsible for staff recruitment and development; student and trainee teaching and assessments including provision of relevant training to junior doctors. To motivate and inspire junior staff to develop their skills and qualifications.
  • To ensure that high quality cardiac devices services are delivered to nationally agreed standards.
  • To ensure all necessary training and support is provided for Cardiac Physiologists and Cardiographers at all levels as required.
  • The post holder will be able to agree an individual job plan, but it is envisaged that they will work clinically in their given profession a minimum of 50% of the time

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is the main provider of district general hospital services for nearly half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wale and employs almost 6000 people.

Our main service locations are The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury. Together the hospitals have just over 700 beds and assessment & treatment trolleys. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical and critical care.

The Cardiac Device Service is based at the Princess Royal in Telford and implants/folows up both brady and complex devices. We have just started a conduction system pacing service and fully supports physiologist led ILR implants.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Clinical Physiology or equivalent
  • BHRS accreditation or equivalent
  • ILS/ALS certification
Desirable criteria
  • Management or Leadership Qualification
  • RCCP registraion or eligibility

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive practical experience in technical cardiology, with extensive experience of working at higher specialist level of independent practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in people/team management

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • In depth knowledge of technical cardiology, including practice with a wide array of complex technical equipment.
  • In depth knowledge of investigation, diagnosis and therapy in all areas of technical Cardiology
  • To be able to identify when emergency medical intervention is required and take appropriate action.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in applying theoretical knowledge into patient care.
