Job overview
**This is a 12 month fixed term/secondment opportunity**.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Higher Level Medical Secretary to work within the Obstetric & Gynaecology Team based at The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.
The post holder will join a large team based in an open plan office, who organise the workload of the Consultants within the department and ensure that an efficient service is provided. There is a large amount of audio typing involved alongside dealing with complex and sensitive patient queries and managing urgent and 18 week patient pathways. The ability to plan and prioritise a varied workload is essential, as are good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a variety of staff groups.
You should already possess 4 GCSE's (grades 9 - 4) or equivalent, RSA stage 3 typing, word processing (or have equivalent experience), knowledge of MS Office and be qualified or working towards NVQ Level 3 Business/ Medical Admin or AMSPAR.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is a pivotal person in the patient’s relationship with the hospital, the clinical team and the Consultant. The team support each other to organise the workload of the Consultants within the department and ensure that an efficient service is provided.
The post holder will produce accurate clinical and general correspondence, regularly using complex and sensitive medical terminology from audio transcription. You will also be required to respond to telephone calls from anxious and distressed patients, responding appropriately to contentious, sensitive and difficult enquiries.

Education/Training
Essential criteria
- 4 GCSE (C and above) or equivalent
- RSA Stage 3 typewriting, word processing (or equivalent)
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages eg PowerPoint, Word, Excel and other IT skills acquired through training and practical experience
Desirable criteria
- AMSPAR
- ECDL
- NVQ 3 Business Administration
Experience and Attainments
Essential criteria
- Experience in audio typing
- Medical Terminology (with the ability to reach the required standard in medical terminology by the end of a 12 month period)
- Secretarial procedures
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of PAS systems
- Medical Secretarial/PA
Skills and Aptitudes
Essential criteria
- Excellent command of English

- Minute taking
- Touch Typing
