Job overview

Are you a ED Registrar/middle grade looking to work in an energetic and welcoming emergency department (ED) in one of the most beautiful cities in the UK?

You do not need to be in training but need to be able to work as the most senior clinician overnight in the ED in the UK.

Applicants should hold a relevant postgraduate qualification (MRCEM, MRCP, MRCS, FRCA or equivalent), and should be ST4 + or equivalent, having completed a minimum of 3 years in approved SHO posts (Post Foundation Medicine) or equivalent in relevant acute specialities including at least 1 year in Emergency Medicine.

Main duties of the job

Working in the ED with direct shop floor supervision from our 20 consultants,  1 consultant nurse, alongside 9 experienced ED middle grades, 3 Advanced Nurse Practitioners and 30 SHOs. The post offers protected weekly departmental teaching and benefits from educational supervision by a consultant as well as many other educational opportunities on shift. A typical day may see you involved in Stroke Thrombolysis, PPCI for STEMI, Major Trauma (as a busy trauma unit) and Acute Paediatrics as well as Minor Injuries.

We use self rostering but need to provide cover at middle grade level 24/7.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You would be joining the senior ED team working on a full shift rota using self-rostering. A full-time equivalent full shift rota is a maximum of 42 hours per week with 1 in 3 weekend cover.

You will be supported by another 8 middle grade doctors who also provide 24/7 cover as well as 30 SHOs and 3 Advanced Nurse Practitioners. There are 14 whole time equivalent consultants who cover the shop floor 8am-midnight weekdays and 8am – 10pm weekends providing supervision and training during your shifts

 

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completed F1 and F2 or equivalent
  • ST1, ST2 and ST3 experience or equivalent, including at least 12 months in EM, or acute specialities (1 point EM, 1 point PEM, 1 point ITU, 1 point anaes, 1 point acute med))
  • Previous Anaesthetic experience - ideally with RCoA basic sign off.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in NHS or equivalent Systems

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCEM primary, MRCEM or equivalent
  • ALS, APLS, ATLS or ETC (1 point for each)
Desirable criteria
  • FRCEM
  • Instructor on ALS/APLS/ETC/ATLS
  • Management or Teaching Qualification

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Quality Improvement/Audit
  • Leadership of Emergency Department Shop Floor Independently (with consultant support from home)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Desirable criteria
  • Ultrasound Competency - POCUS level 1 or equivalent
