Biomedical Scientist Team Manager - Histology

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated, suitably experienced Biomedical Scientist for the role of Biomedical Scientist Team Leader in the Royal United Hospital Cellular Pathology Laboratory, to provide leadership, training and technical expertise within the Histology department.

Situated in modern facilities within the main buildings of the hospital, the department processes over 34,000 histology requests per annum, 24,000 immunocytochemical tests and is accredited by the IBMS and UKAS.

We are interested to hear from applicants who hold HCPC registration and have MSc  or FIBMS in Cellular Pathology, or equivalent, and have current experience in histology at BMS Band 6 level. Experience of staff training and some evidence of supervisory/leadership experience and/or qualification would be beneficial. 

Suitable candidates will need to be able to demonstrate excellent communication and leadership.

The department has an establishment of eight Consultant Histopathologists, two Specialist Trainees and is committed to the training and development of all staff.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this position are 

  • Oversee the day to day running of the histology laboratory along side our current senior team.
  • Perform specialist histology techniques including but not limited to dissection, processing, embedding, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry.
  • Providing training and CPD opportunities for the departmental staff
  • Overseeing and ensuring staff competency
  • Liaising between departmental staff and the Chief BMS, bringing to attention any difficulties or problems.
  • Documentation management for all department SOPs, forms, notices etc through the QMS.
  • Taking management of the reporting outsourcing process, ensuring cases are sent, logged, extra work requests are dealt with and reports are signed out.
