Associate Biomedical Practitioner

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team of Associate Biomedical Practitioners (ABPs) within the Blood Sciences lab at RUH. The successful candidate will join a team critical for the delivery of a high-quality Clinical Laboratory, providing skilled assistance to Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and other Health care Professionals.

Duties are performed primarily to support the technical services in Specimen Reception which includes molecular testing for Covid, flu, norovirus and C.difficile. 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

Perform pre-analytical and basic analytical tasks under Biomedical Scientist (BMS) supervision 

Supervise, organise and allocate work and train other Healthcare professionals. 

Develop own skills and knowledge and undertake additional in-house training to be able to fulfil the role of an Assistant Practitioner

Maintain clinical records and enter patient and result data from own investigations or others into the laboratory computers.

To follow Standard Operating Procedures and policies in area of work.

To be flexible and, after appropriate training, have knowledge and competence to work in all designated areas as required.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Level 4 Diploma/Foundation degree in Biomedical Science or Healthcare Science + 1yr experience in the UK in the NHS OR IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part II + 3yrs experience in the UK in the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Associate Member of IBMS

knowledge & experience

Essential criteria
  • Sufficient experience of working in a laboratory as an MLA, having met the laboratory competencies required as Band 3 MLA
  • Theoretical knowledge to enable processing of patient samples for basic analysis
  • Understanding of quality management and laboratory procedures

Specific skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to teach a technical subject to non technical staff
  • Ability to undertake work methodically, in an accurate and timely manner
  • Ability to train others and open to on the job training
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team
