Consultant Psychiatrist - Older Adult Inpatient/Community

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Are you a Consultant looking for a new opportunity in Older Adult Psychiatry?

We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Bristol Older Adult Services in a post that combines inpatient and community work.

This post combines 6 PAs for inpatient work on Aspen ward at Callington Road Hospital with 4 PAs for community work just down the road with the South Bristol Assessment and Recovery Team (SBART) based at Petherton Resource Centre.

Aspen ward is a mixed-sex open acute ward for 20 older adult patients with functional mental disorders. This part of the post is a job-share with an experienced 0.6 WTE inpatient consultant, including a two PA crossover, and is supported by a SAS doctor, two foundation doctors, a core trainee and frequently a higher trainee.

The community part of this post with SBART is another job-share, again with a 0.6 WTE consultant older adult psychiatrist but without the two PA crossover.  In addition, SBART comprises 3.0 WTE General Adult Consultants, a SAS doctor and Crisis Consultant. The team is supported by GP and F2 trainees, higher trainees and medical students, making for a strong, friendly and lively medical base.  There are well established PDP groups in the Bristol locality where the consultants participate in peer supervision, and the consultant will be encouraged to join one.

It is hoped the combination of inpatient and local community roles will ensure this post offers stimulating, satisfying and enjoyable work.

Main duties of the job

As one of the Consultants on Aspen Ward you will be expected to deliver direct interventions to service users at a level of intensity according to need, including those who require an assertive approach. This will include on-going assessment, diagnoses (including review and clarification) and treatment of mental and physical health needs.  You will also help prioritise admissions, ensure the efficient use of inpatient resources, attend care planning meetings and supervise junior medical staff.  The preparation of MHA Tribunal reports and participation in Tribunals is another feature of this post's work, alongside other inpatient AC responsibilities. You may wish to contribute to running the twice weekly ECT clinics, but it is not obligatory.

As an Older Adult Consultant with the South Assessment & Recovery Team you will be an integral team member and clinical leader within the team. You will be expected to undertake 2 new assessments and 2 medical follow up assessments per week to support the assessment function of the team. In addition, on average per week there are about 10 Recovery medical appointments, arranged in 2 clinic blocks (allowing a degree of flexibility). The Consultant is expected to participate in MHA assessments where appropriate as well as facilitating CTO discussions. They will provide visible and clear leadership at team level, as well as liaison with primary care, focusing on issues germane to Older Adult Psychiatry.
