Job overview

Are you a dedicated, registered Pharmacy Technician looking to expand your knowledge and experience? An opportunity has arisen to join our motivated, friendly and forward thinking team supporting the supply of medicines from our Callington Road Pharmacy dispensary. We are seeking a individual who is enthusiastic about improving the lives of those living with mental health issues. Previous experience in Mental Health or secondary care is not required, as you will be provided with competency based training and support to help you expand on your knowledge and experience.

Working hours are 9am until 5pm Monday to Friday, with an occasional commitment to the Saturday and bank holiday rotas. Working hours for weekends and bank holidays are 10am-1pm.

Main duties of the job

You must be able to perform general pharmaceutical duties under the supervision of a Dispensary Manager and/or Pharmacist, in line with current policies and procedures. You should be a good communicator, be caring and passionate about service users and committed to providing patient centred care. You must also be organised, have the capability to change priorities to meet the needs of the service and be able to adapt to working with colleagues at all levels.


You will be able to utilise your skills in the dispensary, support training of our assistants and be a valuable and important member of the dispensary team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Dispensary
1. To assist in the provision of a safe and effective Dispensary service, under the supervision of the Dispensary manager or nominated deputy in line with current policies and procedures.
2. Dispense and final check prescriptions according to the prescribers instructions and referring to a Pharmacist any unusual dosages or features for confirmation or revision before dispensing. Ensuring that local and national procedures and guidelines are followed.
3. Use the pharmacy IT system to produce labels accurately conveying the prescribers’ instructions.
4. Dispense and label Controlled Drugs, keeping accurate records in line with local procedures and relevant laws.
5. Dispensing clinical trial material and completing associated paperwork in line with protocols and policies.
6. Dispensing special items eg. Cytotoxics and injections for oral use after appropriate training and following current procedures and health and safety guidelines.
7. Dispensing, checking and preparing compliance aids to meet the needs of the patient in lines with departmental procedures.
8. Contacting prescribers or nursing staff regarding problems encountered on prescriptions, referring to the appropriate pharmacist where needed.
9. Receive enquires regarding information about medication, ensuring that adequate detail is obtained and the urgency is established. To interpret these enquires and answer them when appropriate, or pass them onto the appropriate Pharmacist.
10.Undertaking manual top-up of medication, obtaining stock from Stores and storing on appropriate shelving in the Dispensary.
11.Sorting and disposing of returned drugs from the wards and departments according to the Pharmacy and Trust policies. Assessing drugs that are suitable for re-usage after completion of competency.
12.Book taxi’s or arrange adhoc transport if required, after confirmation with section manager and in line with procedures.
13.Performing stock checks and expiry date checks as required.
14.Assisting in quality assurance procedures such as the monitoring of all near miss and critical errors, ensuring that they are logged and reflective practice is carried out after critical errors leaving the department.
15.Maintaining safe systems of work at all times, being responsible for the quality and accuracy of all dispensing undertaken.
16.Keeping the department clean and tidy, undertaking tasks as required in the relevant procedures.
17.Assist with the training and mentoring of new and existing members of staff as required.
18.Raise orders and receipting them on the Pharmacy computer system when they are received.
19.Receiving orders, checking the quantities against the delivery notes and putting away the items in their normal storage positions. This will include signing for deliveries from drivers.
20.Issuing stock items direct to the ward from printed picking tickets and picking medication.
21.Using the allocated programs on the pharmacy's computerised stock control system as required.
22.Performing stock checks and expiry date checks as required.
23.Maintaining safe systems of work at all times, being responsible for the quality and accuracy of all work undertaken.
24.Keeping the department clean and tidy, undertaking tasks as required in the relevant procedures.

Person specification

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent plus accredited underpinning knowledge (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent) Training completed over 2 – 3 years
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (or eligible for registration as a Trainee Pharmacy Technician)
Desirable criteria
  • Be an accredited checking technician (ACT) or be prepared to work towards it
  • Unit 1 of PWDS Medicines Optimisation for Pharmacy Support Staff

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of EMIS, the pharmacy stock holding system
  • Computer literate including Word, Outlook, internet, intranet and email
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience as a hospital Pharmacy Technician

  • Accuracy and attention to detail required for dispensing and final checking prescriptions
  • Able to handle and move heavy objects, e.g. intravenous fluids, boxes of enteral feeds, boxes of archived documents
