Substantive Part-Time opportunity available 18.75 hours per week

An opportunity has arisen to join our large and enthusiastic therapy team here in Secure Services. Wickham unit is a 31-bedded low secure service, providing recovery-focussed care. Fromeside is a regional medium secure unit, which provides a service to 81 in-patient service users with mental health needs.

Within the role, you will work closely with colleagues from the multi-disciplinary team to provide a direct clinical service to in-patients with mental health needs in either of our low or medium secure units.

Main duties of the job

Working as a key part of the multi-disciplinary team, you will routinely undertake specialist physiotherapy assessments, planning, implementing and reviewing appropriate interventions and treatment methods.

As a Band 6 physiotherapist you will be providing physiotherapy interventions across wards at Fromeside and Wickham. Secure Services is an ageless service; however, a high percentage of our service users are adults of working age.  Alongside this you will manage a small team of Exercise Specialists, you will be responsible for their management supervision, running team meetings and overseeing referrals for exercise. Through your clinical leadership you will ensure that a high-quality service is provided by them.

On joining the therapies team, you will receive a comprehensive structured induction package, and we are proud to offer CPD training opportunities in house or support opportunities in taking part in additional training for expanding our skillset.

Due to the complex nature of the work, we carry out and the environment that we work in, we place great value upon the use of supervision, and each member of the team will be in receipt of at least monthly clinical supervision, monthly management supervision and the opportunity to attend monthly reflective practice with the wider team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

• To assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist physiotherapy interventions for patients with mental health conditions or learning disabilities that are patient centred and in consultation with the service user. This will be individually and in groups, both in hospital and in the community. This may include musculoskeletal, neurological and falls.

• To take a lead role in the management of the general physical well-being of service users

• To keep patient clinical records and statistics as per trust and professional guidelines with the use of information technology – ensuring timely, contemporaneous and accurate records.

• To work as a fully integrated member of the multi-professional team using the care plan/recovery planning approach. To work as a care co-ordinator in exceptional circumstances.

• To provide leadership to junior and unqualified staff ensuring that the physiotherapy technician and junior staff receives adequate training, supervision and support and that the delegation of tasks is appropriate to his/her abilities and grade.

• To work within the National Standards of Physiotherapy and the Professional Code of Conduct for Physiotherapists, including the Health and Care profession Council.

• Demonstrate a broad range of therapeutic interventions using safe and appropriate techniques.

• To work in accordance with Professional and Trust Policies and Procedures to ensure compliance with the law.

• To have the ability to risk assess and develop positive risk management for service users as part of the team.

• To observe the requirements of Health and safety at work act and to be aware of risks to patients and self, taking all precautionary safety measures required.

Personal

• To work in a collaborative and co-operative manner with other health care professionals, patients and their families.

• To care for own health and safety as well as that of patients and other members of staff.

• To comply with the terms of the contract of employment and the Trust’s statement of values and beliefs.

• To maintain registration with the Health Care Professional Council and comply with the relevant code of conduct and standards of professional practice.

• To fully participate in management clinical and professional supervision and appraisal as per the trust policy

• To maintain up to date knowledge and competency in the skills required to perform safely and effectively in the role. To undertake relevant training (including statutory and mandatory training) and be responsible for personal development in line with Trust requirements.

• To have very well-established motivational skills to engage those with severe and enduring mental health issues.

• To be able to build therapeutic relationships with those acutely mentally unwell, using well developed communication skills and overcoming barriers to communication such as cognitive ability, altered perception and language.

• To observe the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and to be aware of risk to patients and self, taking all precautionary safety measures required.

Person specification

Essential and Desireable

Essential criteria
  • Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy.
  • Significant demonstrable post registration experience functioning as a Band 5 practitioner.
  • Knowledge of specific requirements to meet the needs of those with mental health conditions or learning disabilities.
  • Be able to demonstrate the application of physiotherapeutic interventions in a variety of settings.
  • An understanding of multi professional team working and an ability to promote the role of the Physiotherapist within that.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in a mental health or learning disabilities setting.
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to teach and advise others.
  • Highly developed communication skills – (both in writing and verbally).
