Job overview
To provide an efficient Porter/non patient transport service to wards and departments in the BNSSG area.
By adopting a flexible approach to all aspects of the job demonstrating an ability to work as part of a team or alone without supervision.
You will hold a current driving license and be able to drive vehicles when required.
An orderly approach to ordering/stocktaking of supplies in the Porter’s store and a general ability to organize and prioritise work is essential.
You will, in the course of your duties meet, and deal with, a large cross section of people so good appearance and good communication skills are very important.
You will need to be able to work as part of the team but also motivate team members.
Main duties of the job
- Help co-ordinate duties to Porter/Transport Team
- Ensure adequate supervision of performance and conduct of staff under his / her lead.
- Arrange for collection and distribution of mail, stores, pharmacy bags, cook-freeze food, dry goods etc. transportation of, between buildings and assisting with related tasks as and when required.
- Ensuring daily maintenance of equipment and vehicles used by the team.
- Organise, provide and assist with day to day business i.e. general messenger service, cleaning tasks, catering assistance, driving responsibilities and cleaning of vehicles.
- Maintenance of staff records including sickness, weekly time sheets and liaise with the service lead.
- Maintain and audit appropriate stocks of medical gases.
- Reporting of maintenance faults to the Service Lead.
- To be smart in appearance and ensure confidentiality relating to patients and staff.
- Helping with any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Service Manager relating to band.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Our Porter/Transport Supervisors will be in some instances, first point of contact and as they are helping to provide a service, it is imperative that a professional, flexible and calm attitude is maintained at all times.
Dealing with staff at all levels will require a certain amount of patience and calmness, as they can be dealing with difficult situations. A sense of humour is required and you should be a team player.

Qualifictions / Training
Essential criteria
- Full Clean Driving Licence / 3 years driving experience
- Experience of Road Traffic legislation
- Experience of working with a schedule of work and ability to work at all levels and work colleagues on operational issues which may hinder team cohesiveness
- Knowledge of Transport Services and Highway code
- Knowledge of scheduled driving area
- Good telephone skills
- Able to drive vehicles i.e. A Luton sized vehicle
- Ability to manage own time and initiative
- Able to do simple arithmetic and follow simple instructions
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Professional Manner and of smart appearance
- Team working - able to work as part of a team
- Flexible attitude to working hours and a commitment to the job and meeting people
Desirable criteria
- No more than 6 points on driving licence
- Any transport related training courses
- Maintenance of vehicle qualifiction
- Customer service experience
- NHS Experience
- Some medical terminology
- Knowledge of hospital sites
- Map reading skills
- Basic IT skills - Excel and internet
- Ability to use GPS systems
