Job overview

The Vocational Support Worker will provide assessment and support to individuals with severe and enduring mental problems who are interested in accessing a range of vocational activities including: voluntary work, work based placements and higher and further education. The service also supports individuals with severe and enduring mental health problems to retain existing vocational activities/employment; this is generally referred to as job retention. The role will also support service users in gaining skills and experiences by facilitating groups or accessing other meaningful activity.

The Vocational Support Worker will work within the Recovery Teams who are part of Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust. The Vocational Support Worker will work alongside a service users identified care co-ordinator as part of the Care Programme Approach (CPA). In some clinically indicated circumstances the vocational worker may be required to take on the role of care co-ordinator.

Main duties of the job

As part of this process the Vocational Support Worker will develop partnerships with all relevant parties, these can include: Care Co-ordinator, Community Mental Health Team, employers, colleges, universities and employment services and voluntary sector agencies, participating in groups and projects as agreed with the relevant managers.

The post holder must be an excellent communicator with an eye for detail. He or she will be organised and confident about carrying their own caseload with supervision from the Vocational Lead and/or Team Manager. They must be adaptable, with the ability to get on well with a variety of people at all levels in different organisations.

The job will require a ‘can do’ attitude to present a positive image of service users to the external world of industry, ensuring that sufficient support is in place to make each job/placement a success.  It should be noted that a key part of this role is to help facilitate groups - in particular an allotment group - and therefore an interest in or knowledge of gardening or horticulture would be highly desirable.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) To attend training sessions as appropriate and seek opportunities to develop skills and understanding that will enhance performance in the role

2) To assess the vocational  needs of service users referred to the South Gloucestershire Vocational Service, by carrying out an agreed vocational assessment.

3) To work with the service user to establish a Vocational Action Plan whereby agreed vocational goals are established under the guidance of a Vocational Specialist and/ or the Vocational Lead, and in liaison with the Care Co-ordinator.

4) In certain circumstances may be required to undertake the role of care co-ordinator  within the CPA (Care Plan Approach) process.

 5) Work independently to ensure that the agreed action plan is carried out, reviewed and evaluated at regular intervals and to liaise with other Trust functions, such as Occupational Therapy and Care Co-ordinators to ensure that any other needs identified in the plan are met.

5) To work in partnership with members of other teams or agencies to support group work or project work related to supporting service users developing their skills and ability to access vocational opportunities.

 7) To organise appropriate training/ college and university courses, jobs and voluntary/paid work placements for the service user. and support the service user in these activities.

8) To liaise with employers and Occupational Health Departments where it has been identified that a service user is at risk of losing their employment (Job Retention).

9) To advise employers on appropriate adaptations within the workplace if appropriate and advise employers on the impact of a service users mental health problem on their performance if appropriate.

9) To broker appropriate Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) employment services where appropriate for the service user.   

10) To support individuals in their place of work and co-ordinate/implement relevant job training to ensure that the person meets the required job performance criteria.

11) To undertake any other training necessary, such as transport training,        where required so that individuals are able to travel to work independently.

12) To liaise and communicate with all relevant parties to ensure they are kept informed and co-operate in the action plan, so that there is a successful outcome for the service user.

13) To provide positive mental health promotion and support to potential    employers.

14) To monitor, evaluate and record all relevant data so that the effectiveness of each action plan can be accurately reviewed.

15) To prepare and present to Care Programme Approach (CPA) review meetings, both verbally and in writing.

16) To undertake the necessary paperwork, record keeping and administrative duties as required by the job, such use of computer, telephone answering etc.

17) To actively promote the positivity of employment of service users.

18) To foster a recognition of the value of work and other vocational activities both to the service user and the wider world including other staff within the Trust. This includes promoting to service users the habits and attitudes conducive to employment.

19) To develop a working knowledge of the benefits systems.

20) To regularly attend community mental health team meetings to update  on service users’ progress.

21) To take part in presentations explaining the work of the team to Trust employees and other appropriate parties.

22) Implement confidentiality at all times.

23) To have working knowledge of relevant legislation.
