Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership, at Doncaster Royal Infirmary for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic individual to join the mortuary service as a Band 6 Anatomical Pathology Technician on a permanent basis.
The successful candidate will join the small but busy team in a service that conducts around 180 invasive Coronial post mortems per year and supports over 750 digital autopsies. The role is to provide a compassionate and high quality mortuary service in conformance with relevant Human Tissue Authority legislation, HTA codes of practice and guidance.
The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint; Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.
The Pathology Partnership will provide the best possible service for patients and clinicians; improving health outcomes, delivering quality and efficiency benefits and ensuring a sustainable workforce for the longer term.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder is responsible for assisting in the provision of the Doncaster Royal Infirmary mortuary service and supporting region wide if required.
Individuals should be motivated with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be well organised and hold the Certificate & Diploma in Anatomical Pathology technology or Level 3 and 4 Diploma. Work in this area requires frequent exposure to highly distressing and emotive situations in addition to periods of intense physical activity with the need to maintain concentration for long periods.
Attention to detail, the ability to maintain confidentiality with a caring attitude and the ability to organise and prioritise work is required.
There is the need to occasionally work under very challenging circumstances.
The post-holder will ensure that documentation and records are accurate and kept securely and will carry out duties to support the efficient running of the mortuary and keep up to date with HTA and UKAS related issues.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Certificate in Anatomical Pathology technology or Level 3 Anatomical Pathology technology
- Diploma in Anatomical Pathology technology or Level 4 Anatomical Pathology technology or equivalent experience
- Commitment to undertake all on the job training
- Up to date training – manual handling
Desirable criteria
- Registration with AAPT (Association of Anatomical Pathology Technology)
- Evidence of relevant CPD
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive relevant experience of working within a hospital or public mortuary, including, hazardous implants removal understanding medical information, training.
- Experience mentoring staff, dealing with families and other service users
- Dissection and reconstruction, including suturing, evisceration of organs, scalpel use, suturing for facial reconstruction/corneal retrieval, enucleation
- In depth knowledge of organ retention, post mortem issues, advanced autopsy and forensic techniques, consent form issues, inc sensitive disposal of organs
- Experience with a range of Mortuary techniques.
- Knowledge of advanced autopsy, forensic, and infection procedures.
- Knowledge of sample taking and distribution

- Previous NHS experience

- Keyboard and IT skills with basic understanding of MS Word, Excel and Access
- Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues
