Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Emergency Medicine department in August 2025 as a Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow for a fixed term period of one year. The post is 80% clinical with a 20% non-clinical element to allow the successful applicant to undertake a project of their choice. Successful applicants will gain the opportunity to improve skills in teaching and training as well as developing their emergency medicine skill set. The position will give opportunities to improve skills in both undergraduate and postgraduate training. There is a study budget attached to the post that will give the opportunity for doctors to gain a PG CERT qualification in medical education or diploma in medical education.

 

The posts do not award a National Training Number, as the posts are not recognised as ‘training posts’. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of these posts are equivalent to ST1 level.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities:
•    The duties of this post are equivalent to ST1.
•    The post holder will be expected to assess and manage all categories of patients presenting to the ED, under the supervision of the ED consultants.
•    The post holder will have the opportunity to be involved in the hospital trauma team receiving critically injured patients by land and air from across the region.  There will be opportunity to develop their trauma team leadership skill through supervised direct patient contact and simulated practice.
•    The post holder will be responsible to the consultants in emergency medicine, in the management of all patients presenting to the department including those attending follow-up clinics and those admitted as in-patients

Non-clinical duties

Successful applicants will gain the opportunity to improve skills in teaching and training as well as developing their Emergency medicine skill set. The position will give opportunities to improve skills in both undergraduate and postgraduate training. Working for our organisation

The Emergency Department at the Northern General Hospital is a large adult-only city department with 115,000 new attendances each year and acts as the Major Trauma centre for South Yorkshire served by road and air.  There is an 8 bedded resuscitation room with excellent links to Critical Care, co-located CT scanning and a state of the art vascular angiography suite.  There are 26 Majors cubicles and a minor injuries and ambulatory care stream, accompanied by a Clinical Decisions Unit.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at point of application
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • ALS
Desirable criteria
  • Instructor candidate status for ALS
  • ATLS, other life support courses
  • Evidence of achievement of exam competencies, e.g. MRCEM Part 1
  • Additional medical qualifications, e.g. Masters degree, PgCert in teaching/medical education

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • 1 year of clinical experience post-qualification and evidence of achievements of foundation competences from a UKFPO attained foundation programme or equivalent, in line with GMC Standards/Good Medical practice
  • 6 months experience of working in the NHS as a doctor
  • Minimum of four months contracted experience in UK Emergency Medicine in a Foundation post or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in a UK Major Trauma Centre or Teaching Hospital Trust in a Foundation post or equivalent

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching medical students
  • Awareness of ethical issues
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, and involvement in a formal research project
  • Evidence of relevant academic publications/presentations
  • Demonstrates an interest in and commitment to Emergency Medicine beyond the mandatory curriculum

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Clinical governance and audit

Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of a portfolio of audit/quality improvement projects, including where the audit loop has been closed and there is evidence of learning of the principles of change management
  • Evidence of understanding the practical workings of clinical governance e.g. handling a complaint, incident reporting

Personal attributes

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values
  • The applicant must demonstrate skills in writing the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC’ good medical practice (2013).
