Job overview

The enteral nutrition practitioner role is a non medical role, supporting the Enteral Nutrition Service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHSFT.

This role will utilise a competency based training programme with the aim of developing competence across the following areas:

  • Function as a non-medical practitioner, undertaking diagnostic and therapeutic procedures relating to Enteral Nutrition
  • To demonstrate a high level of clinical decision-making and an ability to monitor and improve standards of care. To work within his/her own scope of professional practice
  • To develop and demonstrate autonomous practice with minimal supervision
  • Provide education for patients, carers and other healthcare professionals
  • Undertake Outpatient Clinics
  • Contribute to provision of clinical data and service developments to improve patient outcomes

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Perform advanced and specialised clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of enteral nutrition service patients including invasive procedures within the GI tract
  • Work with the Gastrointestinal MDT to support optimal service provision delivering care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Also undertaking relevant procedures within defined protocols
  • Provide expert advice, education and support to patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals within this specialist field
  • Be allocated their own work stream, and working flexibly in support of optimal service provision, will regularly back fill sessions of other practitioners
  • Work with the senior team to undertake and maintain National, Trust and departmental clinical audit to support quality assurance, patient safety and clinical governance
  • Working in collaboration with the MDT to support the development of a high quality sustainable service. Providing a service to uphold patient safety and compliance, reducing incidence of complications and cancellation.
  • Work collaboratively to support the Enteral Nutrition Team and the MDT to provide, evaluate and audit the relevant pathways in accordance with National guidelines
  • Participate in training relevant clinical teams

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Allied Health Professional (AHP) or Nurse (NMC) or Physician Associate (PA)
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in relevant subject
  • Recognised teaching qualification or demonstrable experience of teaching and clinical supervision
  • Willing to undertake Non-medical prescribing qualification and advanced physical assessment at MSc level 7
Desirable criteria
  • Hold or be working towards a MSc (level 7) degree
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Advanced physical assessment qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable significant post registration experience in relevant clinical speciality
  • Awareness of disease-related malnutrition and/or enteral feeding tubes
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the GI tract
  • Experience of providing high quality patient centred care
Desirable criteria
  • Substantial experience of disease-related malnutrition and/or enteral feeding tubes
  • Evidence of training on GI diagnostic and therapeutic intervention

Further Training

  • Willing to undertake training relating to advanced nutritional procedures in a variety of settings i.e. Radiologically, endoscopically, and ward based (invasive procedures)
  • Ability to critically analyse literature and evidence-based practice
  • Critical thinking and reasoning skills in decision-making
  • Evidence of continued personal and professional development
  • Ability to attain additional clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience performing advanced nutritional procedures in a variety of settings i.e. Radiologically, endoscopically, and ward based
  • Ascertain diagnosis through advanced clinical assessment, history, examination and investigations and action appropriate on-going care
