Job overview
The appointment is to commence 03/09/2025 for a fixed term period of 12. MRCP or equivalent is essential. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’, full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.
This is a replacement post. The service and research duties will be supervised by the STHFT Hepatology Consultants. The research will be in the field of Hepatology (henceforth called the liver research post). The Research Fellow would be expected to work towards peer-reviewed publications and potentially a higher degree.
There will be five clinical sessions. These sessions will be worked flexibly according to service demands, clinical ability / experience of the applicant and their research interests. A combination of Hepatology clinics and (upper or lower) endoscopy can be negotiated, depending on the skill set of the applicants and service needs. Some OP clinic are integral to the post and often relate to the research interest.
Main duties of the job
This is a research post; it combines research time with clinical duties within the department of hepatology. There are no on call and no inpatient commitments.

The clinical duties can be tailored to the successful applicant. They will include one weekly ILD clinic (with consultant and CNS) which is essential to research. The other clinical duties are negotiable including hepatology clinics and independent GI endoscopy list (upper and or lower according to experience). Training in upper GI endoscopy can be provided for candidates if necessary.
Working for our organisation
The Northern General Hospital is the home of the City’s Accident and Emergency department which is also now one of three adult Major Trauma Centres for the Yorkshire and Humber region. A number of specialist medical and surgical services are also located at the Northern General Hospital including cardiac, orthopaedics, burns, plastic surgery, spinal injuries and renal to name a few.
A state-of-the-art laboratories complex provides leading edge diagnostic services. The hospital also provides a wide range of specialist surgery such as orthopaedic, spinal cord, hand and kidney transplantation.
The Royal Hallamshire Hospital has a dedicated neurosciences department including an intensive care unit for patients with head injuries, neurological conditions such as stroke and for patients that have undergone neurosurgery. It also has a gastroenterology department, a large tropical medicine and infectious diseases unit as well as a specialist haematology centre and other medical and surgical services.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
These posts are not formally approved training posts (ie they do not hold NTN status). However, it is possible that some of the clinical components of the posts may be recognised as counting towards training in gastroenterology/hepatology (to be negotiated with the relevant Training Programme Directors). One year of this post has counted towards the CCT date for previous incumbents but this is not guaranteed.
The clinical duties will include the equivalent of 5 sessions per week. This will be a mixture of outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists per week according to the needs and interests of the postholder. The SHFT Hepatologists will supervise most of this clinical service, but some specific sessions may also be supervised by Gastroenterologists. Some sessions may be flexibly worked depending on space limitations in the outpatient and endoscopy departments. The incumbent should undertake a minimum of 210 sessions per annum (5 x 42 sessions). Some flexibility will be required, in that the fellows (and their supervisors) will sometimes be approached about backfilling vacant lists at other times of the week.
