Specialist in Colorectal/General Surgery

We are looking to appoint a Whole time Specialist in Colorectal/General Surgery to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate may be expected to work at both campuses in the Trust.
We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.
Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.

The appointee will, together with senior colleagues (at both Consultant grade and other Specialist Grades) be responsible for the provision of the elective Colorectal and General Surgery services and participate in the non-elective on-call rota with responsibility for unselected surgical take and specific colorectal referrals.
The appointee will be encouraged to develop a Colorectal subspecialty interest and ensure attendance at the relevant MDT and Radiological meetings.
The appointee will deliver scheduled independent general surgery and colorectal outpatient and elective theatre sessions and lower GI endoscopy lists. The appointee may be asked to undertake flexible sessions dependent on their availability and directorate needs.

Qualifications

- Medical Degree from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution
- A medical degree or diploma from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution.
- Qualifications required for post e.g. MRCS
- A minimum of 12 years full time Medical work (or equivalent gained on a part-time basis) since obtaining a primary medical qualification at least 6 of which will be in a relevant specialty at Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades or equivalent
- Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice

Experience

- Able to undertake independent lower GI endoscopy with appropriate JAG accreditation
- Experience with surgical management of benign and malignant colorectal conditions
- Able to fulfil and participate in acute general surgical take at Consultant level with suitable operative experience
- Manages the difficulties of dealing with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients, employing expertise and clinical decision-making skills of a senior and independent/ autonomous practitioner
- Demonstrates the underpinning subject specific competencies to enable practising at senior grade as evidenced in job plan and logbooks
- Clinically evaluates and manages a patient formulating a prioritised differential diagnosis initiating an appropriate management plan with the ability to review and adjust this depending on outcomes of treatment
- Critically reflects on own competence, understands own limits, and asks for help when required
