Job overview

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network.  The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients.  A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff.  An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts.  The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB.  As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.  

We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated HCPC registered Clinical Scientist to come work with us. The role in the Protein Reference Unit and Immunology department based at the Northern General Hospital and involves the development and delivery of complex scientific and diagnostic procedures, providing clinical advice, and acting as a liaison between the laboratory and clinicians. The post holder will work within the Clinical Scientist team  to provide a comprehensive service, and is expected to work towards achieving Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists. 

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the Clinical Scientist role at The Protein Reference Unit and Immunology department in SYB pathology is 

Developing and delivering complex and specialised scientific and diagnostic procedures, requiring skilled performance and the provision of clinical advice.

Collaborating with other Clinical Scientists to ensure the provision of a comprehensive service within the Department.

Providing appropriate scientific and clinical advice, assisting in the review and formulation of policies and protocols, and participating in the evaluation of new assays, equipment, and procedures.

Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the Immunology and specialist assays performed in the Protein Reference Unit and Immunology department and to provide scientific and clinical advice, review abnormal results, and discuss urgent findings with requesting clinicians.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant BSc Degree
  • MSc in Clinical Immunology
  • Part 1 FRCPath qualification or equivalent experience in Immunology
  • Certificate of Completion of training issued by the Association of Clinical Biochemists (ACB) or Certificate or Completion of the Scientist training Programme (CCSTP) from the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS)
  • Registration with Health Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Demonstration of continued professional development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • An advanced specialist knowledge of clinical immunology and laboratory medicine
  • Substantial experience as a clinical Scientist in an Immunology laboratory covering an extensive range of tests
  • Experience and knowledge of the assays performed in the Protein Refence Unit
  • Previous experience in audit, research and development, method/equipment appraisal and evaluation
  • Awareness of the political and cultural aspects of the NHS
  • Awareness of clinical governance and risk management
  • Awareness and experience of • Management of a specialist or routine service Experience of managing staff and resources laboratory accreditation standards
  • Knowledge of the relevant standards, legislation, national and local policies and accreditation requirements relating to all aspects of service.
  • Good and accurate keyboard skills
  • Able to communicate complex, sensitive, contentious or emotive information to individuals or groups in a clear and concise manner. Written and oral communication skills.
  • Analytical, logical and judgemental skills in evaluating complex ranges of issues and plan remedial actions
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to deal with a number of conflicting priorities in a calm and professional manner working to demanding timescales
