Job overview

We are looking to appoint Senior Clinical Fellows in Neurosurgery to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. This post is fixed term to start as soon as possible until 06 October 2026 in the first instance, this may be subject to review.

 This is a post designed to support the Neurosurgical team, based predominantly at Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. The successful post holder will work alongside Trainee doctors at the same level attending clinics, theatres & ward rounds. A full shift out of hours working pattern is in operation in line with service requirements.

 The post is suited for individuals who wish to further a career in Neurosurgery in the United Kingdom. The post does not attract a National Training Number. However reasonable support will be available for appointees to pursue respective training needs identified. The duties of this post are equivalent to an ST3+ trainee in Neurosurgery. 

Main duties of the job

This Sheffield Neurosurgical Department is a regional unit serving a population of approximately 2.2 million covering South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, and North Lincolnshire.  The Adult Neurosurgical Service is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with a 54 bed unit, including a 7 bed Neuro-Critical care and a 13 bed HDU.  The Paediatric Neurosurgical Service is separately located at Sheffield Children’s Hospital immediately adjacent to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.  The Sheffield Neurosurgical Unit also includes the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery which comprises two gamma knives, including a Lexsell Perfexion.  In 2009/10, just over 1900 adult and 250 paediatric neurosurgical operations were performed, as well as approximately 900 gamma knife treatments

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Adult Neurosurgical Service runs three operating theatres.  The Paediatric Neurosurgical Service runs one further operating theatre.  Theatres are well supported including operating microscopes, ultrasonic aspirators, Brainlab neuronavigation, and intra-operative MRI (Children’s Hospital).  There is a dedicated neuroanaesthetic service of ten consultant neuroanaesthetists who also provide cover for the neurocritical care/HDU

The Neuroradiological service, including interventional (coiling/embolisation), is provided by seven consultant neuroradiologists.  The Neurosurgical Service has access to three spiral multi-slice CT scanners, four MRI scanners, and a 3D angiography suite.

 The departments of neurology, neurophysiology, neuropathology, endocrinology, head & neck, and ophthalmology, are all sited at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.  Radiation oncology services are located at the immediately adjacent Weston Park Hospital

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise
  • Medical Degree from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution
  • MRCS
  • ALS
Desirable criteria
  • Distinctions, awards, prizes, scholarships or other degrees

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Have evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years clinical experience in the NHS
  • Completed ST2 equivalent competencies

Research

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to contribute to research activities
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Willingness to contribute to teaching activities
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in provision of clinical teaching or training

Continuous Professional Development
